OK, so this is basically the ultimate way for BYT to recommend a show:
This Saturday 3 bands we like, 2 of which we've extensively featured before, 1 of which is local and just riding some seriously positive Pitchfork buzz, are playing a show @ The Cat Mainstage. So, we did a live session, and 2 listening parties, packed them all together nicely, cross linked to old coverages, and are now giving it to you as our Friday morning present.
First up
Check out our initial Deleted Scenes feature

And then enjoy this session that Ryan Wakeman and Dave Adams did with Dan on our very own metro:
Next up in the lineup we have Pretty & Nice who we also have interviewed previously

but have sat down with them now for a little listening party of their great debut Get Young!
Tora:
H - This one is really fun to rewrite lyrics to. For instance: "This tangerine taste's like an or-ange, or-ange, or-ange". Or "You shut up while I read the Torah, Torah, Torah".
J - Or, "That one's not gruel, that's simply Por-ridge, Por-ridge, Por-ridge..."
Pixies:
H- Bobbo and I had to strong-arm Jeremy into finishing this one. It has a rain dance part at the very end. We like that.
J - I still hate this song.
Grab Your Nets:
H- We wanted to include this song, which we had already released a more standard, rock version of already. So it got tweaked and wrangled.
Solar Energy:
H- This is my fave song on the record. Its pretty different for us in general, but I also love the production choices J made; I had completely different notions about how it would sound. That happens pretty often though!
Wandering Eye:
J - This one's the bond song.
H- I went away for two days and got this demo as a gift by email after a day away. A month later, we recorded it and then wrote up the final lyrics about devious spies...
J - ...and evil chicks with wandering eyes.
H - The cool part about not writing everything in a band is that you're allowed to love certain songs more, cause you didn't write 'em.

And then
we have The Drones who are just storming the US from Australia and who kindly did this awesome listening party for us:
penumbra:
i did this during a break in recording another acoustic tune with the band up in the mountains at 3am. dan finished it off the next day. the band was drunk and tired and we had a big fight. we don't fight often. this tune is about the moon landings. no one ever writes about the moon unless its just a pretext to get laid. only sting has tackled the moon head on. i saw an opening. i'm pretty impressed with the moon landings and i feel like they've been ignored for some reason when it comes to pop culture. they're not cool you see, which is retarded. dressing up stupid and getting wasted
will make you cooler than going to the moon. i've read some amazing interviews with the dudes who went up there. they are really mind blowing. especially the interviews with the last two guys who went who were geologists rather than stiff air-force types. this tune is based on all that.
the minotaur:
the minotaur is what you get when a bull crawls up out of the sea and fucks a queen 2800 years ago. its all about disfunction. you get a monster with a bulls head that lives in a labyrinth and eats virgins. its been happening ever since but our sense of superiority never wanes even though evidence to the contrary has been piling up for years. we came and saw and conquered but who's to judge? you wouldn't get a criminal to preside over a criminal court would you?
i am the supercargo:
this is about about an island called tanna which in recent days has had a new asshole torn in it by geological forces, much i'm sure to the maniacal joy of its hyper religo-superstitious inhabitants who'll move any goalpost in their quest to validate their belief in John Frum and the cult of
cargo. anyway, no one was ever called John Frum and this is a tune sung from the perspective of who ever it was that wound up earning that moniker before dropping of the face of the earth.
oh my:
this one starts off sounding like an audi commercial. this is about the end of the world. once upon a time, before christianity, people didn't believe in the end of the world or a history with a pre-destined outcome where life was a movie in which they were the star. now we do whether we're christian or not and the plan goes as such: human imperfection-war and apocalypse-utopia. the bad news is you can only ever get two thirds down that road and then you tend to get stuck in the ugly bit. so we wrote a pop hit about it.
Now, here is the show flyer:
