Brightest Young Things

No doubt you've already heard about the sexy SXSW showcase we're throwing in Austin this Saturday with Flying Dog, ESL and Durkl...well, thanks to the wise savants at Indiefeed.com (partial media sponsors of the event and the world biggest/coolest single-track podcast in the universe) you can actually hear some of the bands literally also. So...

In meantime, we're all headed down South to the Southwest. We asked the bands (15 of them!) who are playing at the Saturday shindig to tell us some stuff they're superExcited about for this week of madness and this is what they said:

Meredith Bragg:

The first moment I have I'm going to (a) get a breakfast taco and (b) attend the Flatstock poster show. Both of these are mandatory SXSW experiences.

(ed: Also, check out this new song by Meredith: his first since 2007!)

Ryan of  Bluebrain:

On the drive to Austin, the minimarts that we are familiar with here in DC (7-11, etc) gradually begin changing into something called Love's. The quality of the products don't necessarily improve, but I have to believe that seeing the word 'love' so often positively effects my outlook on life.

Laura Burhenn of Mynabirds

hey loves!

Upon waking up to MORE SNOW this morning, I am most excited for bare arms and that warm Austin sunshine. SXSW means, most officially, that spring is here. Beyond that, I cannot wait to catch up with all my dear DC friends -- preferably over some great music, delicious burritos, and some free day party drinks. And I can't wait to play a million shows in only four days. I love how small and interconnected the world is. And it's even smaller and even more interconnected in Austin. Here's to serendipitous meet-ups and grand music-fueled adventures! See you so soon.

Dan from Deleted Scenes:

I'm looking forward to getting some serious reading done on the drive down to Austin.

Matthew Hemmerlein

These are things that I`m excited about.

  1. Hearing dope new music from people I've never heard.
  2. Making music for people I've never met.
(He should have added. 3. Hanging out with more camera crews:

Matty T from Tennis System:

I'm excited about the house party we're throwing down the (2917 east 14th street austin, tx 78702) and for the eats. Everyone has been telling me how amazing the food is.

Lucy Loss (Carole Greenwood) of the Beatins:

the beatin's have been in the late-night vampire mode, as have most of our colleagues, recording new music. we have a new song, ( ryan hunter mitchell has graciously collaborated on banjo and vocals) and completed what is for us a longtime goal of recording spoken word (stewart's poetry ) which is going to be in new hand-made packages of music, poetry and art that we are making and bringing to austin. sxsw has been a catalyst for us to complete a great deal of unfinished work. this has imbued us with new creative energy for spring.

seth hurwitz is taking me on a barbecue tour of austin (i hope) and i can't wait to taste the town! lots of anticipation for the great byt shows which can't help but capture the new energy of this musical community that we are so honored to be a part of. see you there!

Laughing Man is most excited about the sunshine and cheap mexican food..also just being around so many great bands and taking in the experience. We can't wait!

Sticken City didn't answer but they're probably most excited about playing for the first time in the USA, giving away an EP for free and debuting their new video:

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/10047687[/vimeo]Kevin from the Dance Party:

We are most excited about the Alamo, shredding it, ripping it, booming in public, pumping aluminum while pumping tunes, metal mania, and getting out of our hotel room for the first time in a few months. Drew also has a buddy who runs a dope bratwurst stand at SXSW, so we are also really stoked about that. Remember the Alamo.

Attached is a picture from a recent photo shoot we did in LA at our hotel room from the future.

I also attached a LIVE recording of a new song called "Body Language" we did at a Blue Microphones demo. The studio version of this song will be on our new record we are currently working on out in L.A. for HellYa! Records/ Atlantic Records.

May Tabol of Pree:

Excited about fun in the sun and (hopefully!) another Hanson sighting at Iron Works BBQ.

So there you have it: BBQ, Bratwurst, 14 kinds of Burrito, and Mini-mart Hotdogs. Apparently SXSW is some kind of food orgy. Of course no one wanted to mention the 150,000 bands playing everywhere from the street to the stadium to a federal prison. Maybe because we're already totally overwhelmed by it that all we can think about is feasting? Fuck it, let's eat!

Sexy flyers for both 19th and 20th parties (both free, both bound to be awesome).

BONUS: Stewart Lupton, after a 10 year SXSW break will be joining the beatin's for their first live performance ever and will also do a solo song/poem performance following their set. Be excited.
