24 Cuts that Killed @ Nouveau Riche in 08
December 18, 2008 by BYT at large
(in which we are nothing but a vessel for words by Gavin, Steve and Andrew as they look back at 2008 and bring you your ultimate weekend playlist-ed)
The last Nouveau Riche of 2008 is this Saturday at DC9, and to wrap things up for you, we have not ten, not twenty, but a full case (24) of tracks that lit up the dancefloors at Nouveau Riche in 2008. The list is so big that we thought it better to let you listen to all the tunes yourself, rather than listen to our stupid DJ-speak about them. In general, it was a year of extremes: wobbly basslines and bugged-out, brain-melting synths… epic pianos, epic downpours of white noise against minimal bass soundscapes, and of course, gritty club beats. You’ll also see flourishes of disco in our picks from Holy Ghost!, Treasure Fingers, and the undisputed disco champions of 2008, Hercules & Love Affair. For club music, it was the year of foreign mysteriosoes like Fake Blood, and local heroes like Nadastrom and Tittsworth.

We were lucky enough to have three artists from this list grace our parties this year: Blaqstarr destroyed the Rock & Roll Hotel with us in March… Miami Horror and his rap buddies Gameboy/Gamegirl rocked a Nouveau Riche at the most unlikely of venues, 1223 in Dupont Circle… and most recently, Sinden and his crew killed it at Gallery in early November.

We’ve also included an additional four-song “afterparty jams ‘08″ section, because it’s not all about bangers – slow jams are what enable the continuation of the human race.
And look out! We have a 6-song EP slated to come out in mid-February, with two tunes from each of your Nouveau Riche DJs, Gavin Holland, Steve Starks, and Nacey. So next year you can expect some of those tracks to show up on this list.

Without further ado, here’s our list, in alphabetical order only. See you at DC9 this Saturday!
