Brightest Young Things

At the beginning of each month we will round up a couple of BYT contributors to let us know what they’re jazzersized about it the upcoming month. Movies Music Shows Books Life Items. Consider this a conversation starter and a cheat sheet of sorts. And, of course, let us know what has you all hot around the collar for in the comments:
(p.s. if you like playing catch up, check out our February choices here)

excited

LIBBY:

Taxlo presents The Very Best, JD Samson (Le Tigre) and Publicist (TransAm) 3/13 @ Sonar:
I saw the Very Best at DC9 and had a total blast: African beats and bootyshaking. I even bought merch-sober! Take that show, add a dash of JD Samson and sprinkle on some Trans AM? Game Over. (Live DC: The Very Best)

March Madness (begins 3/14):
I love filling out brackets, I love winning money and I love eating sliders. Watching the NCAA College basketball tournament at Nellie's Sports bar satisfies all of these needs.

Metal week 2010! Megadeath 3/15 then Anvil 3/20 @ 930 club:
It's almost too much intensity, two of Metal's most tragic figures Dave Mustaine and the front man of Anvil, taking the 930 club stage within days of each other.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Samuel Alito's Shakespearean Mock Trial 3/16 @ GWU:
This year, prominent lawyers and SCOTUS all-stars will stage Judgement at Agincourt (dealing with Henry V's slaughter of French POWs). RBG is such a babe, you have to go and pay homage my favorite Justice before her health declines ever further. (Judgement at Agincourt)

St Patrick's Day 3/17 and all St. Patrick's Day events = Amateur hour.
Guess who is going to be at Shamrock festival (3/13) this year..... TRAIN!!!!!

Washington National Opera's Porgy & Bess 3/20 @ Kennedy Center
Hmm... a folk opera about crippled black man trying to save the love of his life from an abusive boyfriend and a drug dealer named Sportin' Life? God bless the brothers Gershwin. (Kennedy Center Website)

Ruby Suns 3/24 @ Blact Cat:
Listening to the Ruby Suns while lying down in bed is exactly the same feeling you get when your oral surgeon gets that I.V. drop running and you start to feel like you're floating just after the wave breaks in warm Caribbean waters. (The Ruby Suns)

Opening Day at Busch Gardens 3/26:
Let's go on a group trip to Little Europe and RIDE RIDES! I've been waiting my entire life to go to Busch Gardens, the Mecca and Medina of Mid Atlantic thrill rides.(Busch Gardens website)

The 44th annual Smithsonian Kite Festival 3/27 @ National Mall
At the end of March, the weather is nice enough to wear a light jacket and cruise down to the Mall on foot to catch a sky full of dragon kites fighting along with dogs and children running around freaking out. It's amazing. (Kite Festival website)

ALAN

The Academy Awards! The one night where I can obsessively discuss movies for hours and others won’t roll their eyes at me. I may miss the few minutes due to travel, but like last year, I intend to live-blog the whole thing. Come visit BYT for the inevitable “I can’t believe Avatar beat The Hurt Locker” bitch session!

Mother. Directed by Bong Joon-Ho, this thriller focuses on a mother’s desperate search to find the assholes who framed her son for murder. After The Host, expectations for this one are quite high (it’s hard to beat a Korean monster movie), yet I’m sure Joon-Ho’s latest will kick ass. And as a special treat, expect my interview with the director to run later this month.

The Runaways – I’ve had a long-standing crush on Joan Jett, so this one has my curiosity piqued. Is Kristen Stewart up to the task? Probably not, but it’ll be fun to see her try. Also, apparently Michael Shannon plays quite the creeper.

Hot Tub Time Machine – Based on the title alone, this one deserves to become a classic. I’m curious to see whether John Cusack and Craig Robinson, both geniuses in their own right, have any on-screen chemistry.

Reasons to be Pretty – Neil Labute is easily my favorite playwright, and his latest dark comes to the Studio Theater on March 24th. I don’t know much about the play (it’s best to go in fresh), but given the Studio’s last foray into Labute’s twisted mind, I’m sure this’ll be one of the better theater offerings this March.

A Behanding in SpokaneChristopher Walken and Sam Rockwell on stage together? Written by the writer/director of In Bruges? And all I have to do is travel to New York City? I'm so there.

The Vernal Equinox – I mean, who isn’t tired of winter?

CALE

I can't stand going to the theaters (I hate people and my home theater is pretty nice) so movies are new to me when they're released on BluRay/DVD. People are always like "but I can't wait that long", but it only takes a couple months to get into the groove and then you're on the home release schedule with your cheap popcorn, bathroom break pauses, director's cuts, lay-z-boy couches, properly configured surround sound, and lack of children. Here's my saved for later queue for March:

Ponyo 3/2
Up In The Air 3/9
Capitalism: A Love Story 3/9
Astro Boy 3/16
Fantastic Mr. Fox 3/23
The Informant! 3/23
The Men Who Stare At Goats 3/23
Where The Wild Things Are 3/?

Red Steel 2 comes out for Wii late March and uses the new Wii Motion Plus Gyroscope add on to give you true 1 to 1 motion control sword action.  Wheee!! I'm gonna look so cool in my living room doing this!!

As for music, aren't there like a million releases from Feb you haven't even listened to yet? I think 2010 should be the year of catching up. Please? FINE, be on the look out for new stuff from Sam Amidon (if you slept on 2008s All Is Well, pick it up), New Young Pony Club (remember them?), jj, Liars (strike that, I own enough Liars albums), Ted Leo (ditto [chill]), Broken Bells (The Shins + Danger Mouse, listen here), Goldfrapp, and some Galaxie 500 & Jimi Hendrix re-issues to name a few, but who cares about any of that, PLASTIC BEACH THE NEW GORILLAZ ALBUM IS OUT MARCH 8/9th!!!! Go listen to Demon Days again and tell me that is not one of the best albums of the decade.

As for notable shows, Washed Out is at DC9 on the 11th, Gilberto Gil is at Lisner on the 13th, The Very Best and Tabi Bonney are at the Hotel on the 14th and Air is at 9:30 Club on the 17th. It's $40 but worth it, they are suprisingly great live.

The Ricky Gervais show continues in March, Fridays on HBO. They take his infamous podcasts and present them with simple animation. Sure it's recycled material but it doesn't matter cause this is the funniest stuff you've ever heard and it's worth a revisit.

Also can't wait for Conservative Victory: Defeating Obama's Radical Agenda by Sean Hannity out March 30th!!!

ALFONSO

FUN FACT: March is the greatest month of the year.

Liars “Sisterworld” (March 9): The Liars are so weird. SO weird. But more than they are weird, they are insanely good. This album is going to be amazing. This video is amazing. I’m so excited.

Pavement “Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement” (March 9): I don’t need this because I have everything they’ve ever done, I’m just happy to see Pavement on a new release chart. SM + AB = 4ever.

Love Is All “Two Thousand and Ten Injuries” (March 23): If you like Love Is All you will like it. I like Love Is All and I like it.

Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and Raekwon “Wu-Massacre” (March 30): I haven’t taken the time to look into this at all beyond seeing the album cover, which is pretty much all you need to know.

Spoon w/ Deerhunter @ 9:30 Club (March 23): Spoon and Deerhunter are playing my birthday. Yessssssss.

Japandroids w/ Love Is All + Tennis System @ RnR Hotel (March 29): I’ve seen both Japandroids and Love Is All, but in venues I don’t think they quite worked in. So, this should be good. I’ve also never seen Tennis System and have wanted to, so this should be good.

The Runaways (March 19): I have 0 opinion on Kristen Stewart, but every time I watch this trailer I’m blown away at how good she looks as Joan Jett. I’m hoping this counterbalances how disturbing it is to see Dakota Fanning resembling an adult.

Ponyo on DVD (March 2): Miyazaki is the greatest. This is his weirdest. You should see it if you haven’t, and if you’re under the influence of narcotics then good luck buddy!

Ninja Assassin on DVD (March 16): Because I missed it in theaters and I haven’t stopped hearting ninjas since I was 8 and I don’t intend to start now.

Fantastic Mr. Fox on DVD (March 23): Because I missed it in theaters and I really want to cussing see it.

Whatever Conan O’Brien posts on Twitter throughout the month (All month): Because it’s made my day every day so far.

PETER

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club -- Beat the Devil's Tattoo CD/DVD

Stomp stomp stomp. They've found a secret formula to make rock and roll sound currently dangerous and I want to drink it.

Afghan Star-- HBO TV/DVR/DVD

Like American Idol but with more Kite Running.

Fan Death -- A Coin For The Well CDEP/MP3

The only reason I chose this euro-disco EP to include with this list is that I really like them and they are cuties! That's the only reason.

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/7407586[/vimeo]

Players -- Spike Network for Boys TV/DVR/DVD

Starring this guy from Upright Citizens Brigade, as long as they keep the Spike executives from casting Big Jugs as main characters, this no-laugh track sitcom should be pretty "fun".

The Streets -- Computers and Blues

Mike Skinner is sick of the name the Streets so this is their last album he says. When they started he claimed he could only write songs about what was immediately happening to him, which is why the last couple albums of his have been all about how weird it is to be famous, which of course is completely boring. Going by the songs he's released on Twitter, he's finally discovered the possibilities of persona, first of which is the ability to make songs you can actually dance to. Good or bad, like all streets records it will be eminently listenable and I will actually buy and consume 100% of it.

Getting A DC Driver's License -- DC DMV/PD

The MD license that I've had since 2005 is expiring, and I need to go to the police station or wherever to get a new one. For some reason my birthday is wrong on it, like 5 days off, so hopefully that won't be a problem. Hopefully my homelessness won't cause any issues either. Chances I forget until the day-of: 87%.

ANDY

If the warming weather, spring training and college basketball don't give you a boner for March, then this show calendar I made should. I could easily spend the month in various venues across town -- and that's not including the local shows.

And SXSW is this month!

(I'm not going unfortunately. But if you're going, I highly recommend Kerbey Lane -- get the Migas -- Best Wurst -- I prefer the smoked jalapeno with sauerkraut and curry ketchup, but they're all delicious -- and the chorizo sausage breakfast taquitos from Taco Cabana. The deliciousness will cure your hangovers.)

All I can think about: Season 3 of Mad Men comes out on dvd March 23. I imagine all other March activities will pale in comparison.

That said, I'm looking forward to Beach House, Wilco, Vampire Weekend, and Soft Pack shows.
