Watching Movie Trailers on Mute at Work

Watching Movie Trailers on Mute at Work

November 12, 2008 by Libby Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Where I Liveblog Movie Trailers on Mute (’cause I am at work)….

I highly recommend going to E Street tonight for the DC Film Society’s Coming Attractions- a night chalk full of trailers. You should go because 1. Movie trailers are hilarious 2. It’s a good place to bring a date 3. There’s a lot of stuff to win: posters, movie tickets, DVDs, VIP passes to early screening of Quantum of Solace.

You’ll see up to 30 trailers for some of the following films: Bride Wars, Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, Four Christmases, The Unborn, Nothing Like the Holidays, Revolutionary Road, Broadway’s Doubt and Frost/Nixon, Underworld 3, Seven Pounds (with Will Smith), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Yes Man, Disney’s Bolt, Notorious (as in B.I.G.), Confessions of a Shopaholic, among many others.

Since we are all already going to see Australia, Revolutionary Road, Notorious, and Milk, I am going to check out the trailers for some of the more interesting titles I have yet to hear about.

The Unborn

Even on mute I can already tell this is definitely a horror film within the opening 2 seconds. Hot girl and creepy kid grabbing her stomach, maybe she aborted him!- hence the title The Unborn. Yeah, pretty sure this is a Christian film about abortion.

Verdict: no way I’m giving money to Michael Bay’s Christian agenda. I’m pro-abortion pro-choice.

Doubt

This looks like a period film until a nun, Meryl Streep, rips what seems to be a concealed ipod out of a students lap. It says it’s set in 1964- I will have to rewind. SICK! Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a priest! Uh oh the screen just said “There is no evidence”…. is this a film about Hoffman molesting the future kid with the ipod? From what I gather Amy Adams has some doubt as to Father Hoffman’s moral rectitude.

Verdict: SEE IT!!!!!!!!! All Star cast, awesome costumes, salacious story.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Whoa, everything is backwards!!! There is a hideous baby. Wait I think this is going to be that Brad Pitt movie where he ages in reverse. It is. What happens when he is old and looks like a baby- is he still mentally sharp or does his mind become less developed. So many questions!!!!!!

Verdict: Must see.

Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans

What the hell is this goth shit?!?! Goth knights in body armor? Aren’t Lycans some sort of microscopic sea organism? I can’t watch anymore of this trailer.

Verdict: Gay.

Seven Pounds

Oh god. Will Smith. Terrible. This is so melodramatic. He’s standing on rugged cliffs over looking the breaking waves Now he’s running in the rain. Give. Me. A. Break!!! I have no idea what this film is about except I know that WIll Smith is trying to do Rosario Dawson.

Verdict: yeah right.

Four Christmases

I hate Holiday films. HATE em. But this one has Vince Vaughn. It also costars Reese Witherspoon who I don’t mind. From what I gather San Francisco yuppies who constantly talk on their cell phones have to spend Christmas with their four families (I think there have been some divorces). There is a moon bounce scene, baby vomit scene, and I think The Rock (Dwyane Johnson?) is in it.

Verdict: See it on an airplane.

Frost/Nixon

This is a typical trope: ” In 1974 President Nixon resigned… to hide the truth… but one man… had a few questions…their only hope was the truth” YES!!!!! This is obviously about the David Frost interviews with Nixon where Nixon blew it. Fact: did you know that Nixon lived in the Scarface house?

Verdict: Seeing it with my Dad.

Alan Says:

Doubt is an awesome play, and Meryl Streep looks perfect for that role.

Also, I’m pretty sure the Benjamin Button trailer is better on mute.

I saw the preview for the Unborn the other day in a movie theatre and almost died.
Not about abortion BUT dead twin brothers you never knew you had.
Looked hella scary.

Super amped about Benjamin Button.
Doubt was a great play, but I am always wary of great plays that turn into stagnant movies.

God, I love winter movie season.

libby, since you mention the lack of love for holiday movies, i have to ask: did you hate ‘home for the holidays’, too? (yes, i know it’s ancient) i usually can’t stand holiday flicks, but loved that movie. loved it.

The only holiday film i like and will watch is HOME ALONE.

Libby,

Not even A Christmas Story? Blasphemy!

eddie Says:

nonsense. if that is the case then i deduce you’ve never seen home for the holidays. good day.

Libby Says:

Home Alone is right up there with Jurassic Park- pure genius. I think it might be John Williams that does it for me.

November 12, 2008 at 2:39 pm
eddie Says:

while i agree that john williams is a god and that home alone has its own redeeming qualities, this still says nothing of your failure to acknowledge home for the holidays as a wonderful dramedy.

The holidays make me want to drink- and it’s detox November- thanksgiving will be tough enough, I don’t need holiday movies cramping my style.

Amanda Says:

maybe it’s the fact that i’m five years old, or merely the fact that i love christmas, but i love christmas movies.

5. Muppet Christmas Carol
4. A Wonderful Life
3. Home Alone
2. Elf
1. A Christmas Story

other films that would probably make the top ten aren’t really considered “christmas”movies, but have long christmas scenes would include the family stone and little women and a little princess (all girls are princesses).
all the cartoons get honorable mentions.

that said, I also enjoy all the Peanuts holiday specials and have seen almost every “holiday” film ever, including Arnold Schwarzenegger’s JingleJingle All the Way.

I will probably see four christmases in theatres, on black friday with my family.

what? no love for “Scrooged”? one of the finest Bill Murray movies ever made, and not just because he gets kicked in the nuts by Carol Kane.

Stephanie Says:

Since childhood I’ve been obsessed with the Charlie Brown movies. All of ‘em. So A Charlie Brown Christmas is definitely one of my favorites. And I always used to watch the claymation (?) Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer that would come on tv when I was a kid. With the Abonimable Snowman!

1. All this talk of good holiday films, and no one mentions The Ref? Home invasion, kidnapping, blackmail, cat piss and candleabra headgear? What’s not to love? Denis Leary only wishes he still got movies this good to do.

2. I love trailers more than the next guy, but without some variety, I imagine a feature length collection like last night’s gets pretty dreary after a while. I love watching the 42nd Street Forever collections, but that’s because of all the camp and craziness and variety. Not many surprises if you’re just watching trailers for the upcoming fall/winter movie roster. Actually, come to think of it, the lack of surprises or anything at all off the wall is also my major complaint with E Street’s well intentioned but oh-so-dull new midnight movie series.

3. Um, that’s “chock-full”, not “chalk full”. Unless there was a sidewalk art element to the program of which I’m unaware.
