Anyone worth their horror movie fan salt worships at the altar of Dario Argento.
For empirical evidence I will quote Jason’s description of “Suspiria” from his “Best Horror Movies you May Not Have Seen” post this past Halloween:
Suspiria: Dario Argento’s best film. His use of color and violent images make for a wonderfully creepy dreamlike film. The color red looks like its bleeding off the screen. Set in a eurpoean ballet school run by witches, this film captures Argento’s penchant for totally strange and surreal scenes. Look for the one where the girl crawling in the attic falls through the floor into a room filled 6 feet deep with barbed wire. Totally unbelievably, and completely horrifying.
Now, Suspiria, in all its deranged glory was actually the first part of Arento’s projected “Three Mothers” Trilogy (or “thrillogy” as some have been inclined to say, while in throes of pun madness) the second one of which was (the flawed) “Inferno”. Which was made in 1979.
So now, almost 30 years later, Dario returns with the final piece of this “mood” puzzle (there is no narrative connection, so you can freely see them at your own pace and accord):
“The Mother of Tears” (starring Dario’s daughter Asia) opens for one week only today at E street Cinema.
The story concerns an ancient, bloody evil is unleashed in the form of the third witch, the Mater Lachrymarum, and Asia is the only one that can (maybe) stop her. But lets face it, it is all about how someone’s head is going to be cut open in the most disturbing yet disturbingly beautiful way.
I saw the preview the other day and almost peed my pants and broke all the fingers in Haley’s hand, I was that scared.
Go.
