Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: "5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?" She doesn't care. I also send a lot of "notes" to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I'll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, a dozen or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:
Ed Wood
Easily my fav Tim Burton film
5 Stars
Fritz the Cat
Pretty much unwatchable, no wonder Crumb disowned it.
2 Stars
The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Not since Crumb have I seen such a fascinating and intimate portrayal of mental disorder/genius. Even if you've never heard of Daniel this is a beautiful, engaging, and moving film. Must see!
5 Stars
Stella: Season 1
Their short-lived stint on Comedy Central - like the live shorts but with less humping/dildos and a bigger budget. An acquired taste to say the least. And I acquired it long ago. Yum.
5 Stars
The Weather Underground
Fascinating look at anti-Vietnam sentiment of the 60's focusing on the controversial group of forgotten terrorist radicals. (this was sent pre-Obama hype)
5 Stars
A Scanner Darkly
Linklater uses his rotoscope animation from Waking Life to amp up the psychedelics in this tripped out dark comedy/thriller. Gorgeous, disturbing, thought provoking, and really funny.
4 Stars
Grass
Pretty weak from a technical standpoint, but lots of great archival footage of hilarious drug hysteria
3 Stars
Baraka
Re-watched this for the 20th time last night. Greatest movie ever made. (Blu-Ray version is in the mail, can't wait)
5 (million) Stars
Cloverfield
Clever and fun. Had to pause halfway through to prevent throwing up though.
4 Stars
Be Kind Rewind
hilarious, effortlessly quirky, adorable
4 Stars
Nature: Koko
A one hour made for TV update on the 1978 doc about Koko the gorilla (& friends) who has learned sign language. Watch the original first, but def rent this as well, some amazing footage.
4 Stars
Wonder Showzen: Season 1
Jesus Christ.
5 Stars

God loves a cheerful giver.
ok, a recommendation. last week I saw john sayles' "baby, its you" and it was adorable and charming and what more high school movies should be like.
the devil and danile johnston is ESSENTIAL watching.
have you done a one second review of "its all gone pete tong"?
be kind rewind was really, really good.
a slightly longer "be kind rewind" review:
http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/movies/film-review-be-kind-rewind/
I rated It's All Gone Pete Tong 3 stars but didn't send a note about it after I saw it. It's sort of faded from memory now so I'd have to watch it again to give a valid opinion, but 3 stars seems about right. Lot's of movies you should watch before getting to that one.
