One Second Movie Reviews (Part 8)

One Second Movie Reviews (Part 8)

May 15, 2009 by Cale

Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: “5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?” She doesn’t give a shit. I also send a lot of “notes” to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I’ll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, a dozen or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:

Into the Wild
Who cares if the real McCandless was an ass? This moving and haunting depiction of his life is an absolute must see. Continues to be thought provoking for days afterward.
4 Stars

The Signal
Done before, tries too hard. The three directors cause dramatic tone shifts that don’t work and give you the feeling they’re making things up as they go along.
2 Stars

Bad Santa
Way better than you would expect from previews – directed by Zwigoff who did Ghost World and Crumb.   Hilarious and awesome in so many ways.
5 Stars

Spirited Away
Should be at the top of everyone’s queue who hasn’t seen it – mind blowingly kick ass
5 Stars

Daniel Tosh: Completely Serious
Daniel is clever and talented. His delivery is tight and wonderfully sarcastic. His fans seem to be a bunch of douchebags that don’t realize how smart he actually is. Check out the extra scenes too.
4 Stars

Who Killed the Electric Car?
You don’t have to be a tree-hugger to get riled up at this fascinating glimpse at how big business and government bureaucracy put an end to something this country needs so desperately
4 Stars

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby
Adam McKay and Will Ferell make movies way too weird to be this popular.
4 Stars

The Night Listener
the true story this is based on is fascinating, this fictional adaptation is not amazing, but definitely worth watching, try not to read too much about it beforehand
3 Stars

The U.S. vs. John Lennon
endless amounts of great archival footage and fantastic interview subjects, if only he were still alive today :-( god dammit
5 Stars

Fired!
Cute little doc about getting canned, not worth a rental, but worth watching instantly if you’ve got nothing better to do
3 Stars

21
Watched on the plane to Vegas. Really want my $7 back. Avoid at all costs. Cheesey McCheesey. Not even Spacey can save it.
1 Star

Wholphin: Issue 1
Short films picked by the McSweeny’s folks. Every issue is amazing and worth your time. Super duper highly recommended.
5 Stars

Svetlana Says:

21 was bad. Becca and I saw it on a bus en route to NYC and we kept rolling our eyes EXTRA exageratedly (sp?).

I thought the Night Listener was really creepy and effective. The end was a little bit of a letdown but realyl creepy and effective overall. Insomnia is the other good creepy Robin Williams movie

Alan Says:

I wish I could watch Bad Santa for the first time again. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard in a movie theater.

I’ll be sure to add US v. John Lennon to my queue.
