Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: “5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?” She doesn’t care. I also send a lot of “notes” to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I’ll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, ten or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:
For Your Consideration
A major misstep for this talented crew. Looks like it was filmed in 1993 for twenty dollars. Half the jokes only make sense to Hollywood insiders, and the other half aren’t funny. Total bummer.
2 Stars
Penn & Teller: Bullshit!: Season 2
Plenty of eye-opening moments, taking a more sociopolitical path by tackling recycling, alcoholics anon, PETA, The Bible, and the War on Drugs. Just skip the comic bits, which grow tiresome.
4 Stars
The Real Dirt on Farmer John
I left feeling there were some telling moments left on the cutting room floor, but nonetheless an engaging and entertaining document of this goofball cross-dressing hippie farmer redneck.
4 Stars
Life Is Beautiful
(To Svetlana) I assume you’ve seen this and just not rated it… it is your new fav movie
5 Stars
Hairspray (2007)
Haven’t seen orig in 15 yrs so tried 2 judge on own merit. Couldn’t help but get caught up in the infectious cheerfulness of it all. Everything happened exactly like u wanted it, Walken was great, etc
3 Stars
Origins: Nova
Not as exciting as it could be. I’m a big fan of Tyson, but at times it comes off a bit cheesy/low budget. If you don’t have a clue how the earth came to be, this is def a good place to start tho.
3 Stars
Star Trek: Generations
Just awful. What a terrible way to draw things out after the wonderful Part 6. Sure, plot holes are par for the course in the Trek universe, but these were inexcusable. Also, Data is not funny at all.
1 Star
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Poorly directed, edited, and acted, except for Sam Rockwell, who steals the show. As a big fan of the source material, it has it’s moments, but if you’re a newbie, just read the book.
3 Stars
Shooter
OMG I want my 126 minutes back. Delete from your queue and never think about it again. Shockingly stupid.
1 Star
The Wrestler
It’s as good as you’ve heard. A touching portrait of isolation. More compelling than Rocky, better acted than Million Dollar Baby, and funnier than Suburban Commando (I assume).

I liked Life is Beautiful, but also had sex after it.
November 13, 2009 at 2:09 pmwith eddie, no less.
November 13, 2009 at 2:44 pmErnest – yes. With eddie. Of course. Way back when the movie came out eddie and I were totally so gay for each other. In fact we had sex during Life is Beautiful. And after. He wanted to have it during our screening of Schindler’s List, too, but I felt that was a bit too inappropriate (namely because I enjoyed the score, and his sloppy mouthing of my gooberstick was audible over the tinny sound our single-speaker 19in television could produce). Man, you’re good. I would never have admitted this but for your great opening salvo. Thank you, ernest, thank you.
November 13, 2009 at 2:56 pmthere are some GREAT tittie shots in Shindler’s List

you know, i saw “life is beautiful” in the movie theatres when it first came out, and was never the biggest fan. i think it is because of benigni. he has always been hard for me to warm up to.
