One Second Movie Reviews (Part 13)

One Second Movie Reviews (Part 13)

September 15, 2009 by Cale

Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: “5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?” She doesn’t care. I also send a lot of “notes” to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I’ll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, ten or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:

The Vice Guide to Travel
If you’re a Vice fan I guess you should check it out, but at times it leaves a lot to be desired… I mean, it has some moments… just not enough.
3 Stars

An Inconvenient Truth
“In 39 years, I have never written these words in a movie review, but here they are: You owe it to yourself to see this film.” -Roger Ebert
4 Stars

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Hands down the worst Star Trek film that I’ve seen. In fact, it’s one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen in my entire life. Please god don’t ever let William Shatner sit in a director’s chair again.
1 Star

There Will Be Blood
Pretty much perfect
5 Stars

Happy Feet
At times too cheesy and formulaic, but mostly it’s full of startlingly beautiful Pixar quality environments, great voice acting, anti-theist overtones, sexual innuendo, and general strangeness. Cool.
4 Stars

Margot at the Wedding
just read svetlana’s review by searching on the title at brightestyoungthings.com (here)
4 Stars

Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
Best concert movie ever. Hands down. Directed by Demme (Silence of the Lambs) and Byrne.
5 Stars

Serenity
Two hours of sci fi cliches and TV quality acting/effects. Never seen the show, so maybe that would have helped? Dunno, this was just so amateur in every respect I don’t think it would have mattered.
2 Stars

Man on Wire
Simply a must see documentary. Expertly mixes interview with archival footage and reenactments that don’t suck. Beautiful, quirky, and hilarious.
5 Stars

Capturing the Friedmans
do it!!!!!! OMG
5 Stars
