Screen on the Green does not kick in till July, and while the jazz in the sculpture garden, free Regina Spektor and the James Bond movies may somewhat fullfill your outdoor entertainment needs, there is nothing like settling down with a picnic and a good old Hollywood movie, with a grand old mansion as you backdrop.
And this is where Hillwood comes in.
Have you been there yet?
Marjorie Merriweather-Post’s house is a dream of couture gowns, faberge eggs and some of the best looking gardens you’ve ever seen (the first time I came to the US when I was 16, I definitely posed with the lions while stately waving one time too many)

In any case, every summer the estate hosts a series of films and events (last year there was a Doris Day /Rock Hudson extravaganza) and this year is no different.
Starting tomorrow (Saturday, May 31st) and ending on June 13th (also a Saturday) they will be playing a trifecta of old-glamour-perfection in the following order:
May 31st. “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”
Marilyn Monroe loves rich men.
Jane Russell loves the poor but funny ones.
They both love low cut, bedazzled dresses, and singing on cruise ships.
Perfection.
June 7th “Funny Face”
Fred Astaire is a fashion photographer.
Audrey Hepburn is a shy book seller.
He discovers her (and her “funny face”), takes her to Paris, they sing, they dance, she runs down stairs in opera gloves yelling “Take the Picture! Take the Picture!”.
Perfection.
June 13th “Strait Jacket”
I have actually not seen this but it has Joan Crawford in it and seems like it has something to do with insanity. And immaculately groomed eyebrows.
Perfection.
Details:
All movies start at dusk and are shown on the Lunar Lawn of the estate.
It DOES cost money ($15 Public and Friends, $10 Children 6–18.) but in my mind it is SOOOOO WORTH IT.
