If someone can tell me whatever happenned to the Library of Congress’ movie program, I would be most grateful. But in the meantime, there is still plenty of free yet impressive movies for everyone to go see. Its certainly a better deal than shelling out 10 dollars + 20 dollars in snacks to see The Heartbreak Kid, or worse, some Dane Cook movie.
So, day by day:

Movies with Fritz continues @ RNR Hotel, 8 pm
We were there last week, for a STYLEistics meeting and we can tell you the set up is pretty sweet: they bring all the couches downstairs, set up an oddly hodgepodged yet comfortable seating area downstairs and there is always a theme:
first week it was John Cusack, last week it was a Tarantino double bill (with a twist: Natural born killers kicked it off and then Kill Bill finished it off) and this week, who knows?

The Annihilators @ Dr. Dremo’s, 8 pm
Now that Dr. Dremo’s has announced its final closing date for January 2008, I am just wondering where will Psychotronics take their Tuesday fun to. I am almost inclined to rally the troops, open up Visions again (every plan I have, by the way, somehow involves reopening Visions) and have midnight movies AT ALL TIMES OF THE DAY.
This week: Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (TV’s Boom-Boom Washington of “Welcome Back Kotter”) stars in this take-back-the-streets revenge flick about some Vietnam Vets who band together to save a fellow vet’s neighborhood from some punk-ass thugs. This action-packed adventure is what you would have gotten if you crossed the ‘A-Team’ with ‘The Golden Girls.

Ping Pong @ Japanese Cultural Center, 6.30 pm
I come from a place where table tennis is HUGE. But I also come from a place where anything we’re good at is HUGE (read: archery, water polo, chess and moonshining, among other things). But no matter how good we were at Ping Pong, the Japanese always kicked our ass so hard it was almost painful to watch.
So, forget “Balls of Fury” and head over to the Japanese Cultural Center for 114 minutes of a movie that features an ensemble cast of oddball characters, whose lives revolve around this fast paced sport. The mixture of humor and sentimentality as well as Matrix-esque special effects and intense action makes Ping Pong a movie to remember

Operation Filmmaker @ The Hirshhorn, 8 pm
While preparing to direct Everything is Illuminated in the Czech Republic, Liev Schreiber saw an MTV documentary that followed an aspiring film student through the streets of Baghdad. Schreiber invited the student to intern during their location shoot, and Nina Davenport filmed his experience. Her portrait offers insights into the contrast between Western and Middle Eastern worldviews, a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Hollywood filmmaking, and a deeply personal saga.Bonus: Davenport should be on hand to introduce the movie.

Indigenes @ GW, 4 pm
Though conventional in its technique and lacking in any real character development, Days of Glory, a French Moroccan Algerian co-production, is an involving and heartfelt film whose outstanding ensemble cast won the award for Best Actor at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
It can also boast that it was the most important if not the most successful of the five films in the Oscars’ Best Foreign Film category. After French Premier Jacques Chirac saw the film, he agreed to compensate all North Africans who fought in World War II by unfreezing their pensions, a result the director Rachid Bouchareb worked hard to achieve. .

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings in this area? I hear they do it at GMU–does anyone know if it’s any good? It’s that time of year and I realize I haven’t seen it in forever.
