Free Movies This Week

December 1, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

It is good to see that as the lethal combination of holiday season and the economic downward spiral approaches DC still holds up its part of the free movies deal. I laid this well meaning, but not much read column to rest for a little while, but I think the resurrection time is NOW.
OK, so this week, in youtube clips and blurbs we have:

MONDAY
+The Frank Zappa Mini Festival continues today at 7 pm @ The Library of Congress with “Does Humor Belong in Music?”, a documentary of a live show they played in 1984 in NYC. For Zappa fans, this is a must. For fans of rock concert videos, you can’t go wrong here.

what is a girl like you doing in a harbor like this?

TUESDAY

+The Washington Psychotronic Film Society has settled nicely into its new DC proper environs a few weeks a go, and they kick of December with an 8pm screening of: The Incredible 2 headed Transplant, which as you may expect is a story about a head of a maniac is grafted onto the body of a peace-loving pacifist.

+Bonus: Not free but “free with ticket to the Stella show purchase” the Sixth and I Synagogue will be hosting a special afterparty and screening of “Wet Hot American Summer”. Nerding out completely encouraged.

then a little break and on

FRIDAY

+ As part of the “The Other side of Japanese Cinema” Film Series The Mourning Forest is on at 7 pm @ Freer Sackler, winner of the 2007 Grand Prix prize at Cannes which tells the story of an elderly widower and the young woman who works as his caregiver. When she accompanies him on a daytrip, she discovers that he intends to go on a more spiritual quest.

on

SATURDAY
Get your anime fix with “The Grave of the Fireflies” at Freer Sackler at 2pm (fanboy bonus: there will be a panel discussion afterwards)

and somewhat unfortunately scheduled at exactly the same time National Gallery is showing “The Godfather”. Marlon Brando’s cotton filled cheeks ON THE BIG SCREEN. For free. If I need to tell you why you need to see it, then probably you shouldn’t bother to go.

and in conclusion of the week:

SUNDAY
brings us
“Fine, Totally Fine”

Till next week kids.

Highly recommend “Grave of the Fireflies” though it will make you cry. And if you don’t cry then you don’t have a soul.

I’ve had Grave of the Fireflies sitting on my shelf for about 6 years now and have never gotten around to watching it. I don’t know why. Last night I was rattling off movie options to my lady, including Grave, but then we remembered Wall-E was out and I ran to Best Buy to pick it up.

There isn’t much point to this story except that I promise I’ll watch it next.

Cale,

Danielle is absolutely right. Grave of the Fireflies is a tear factory.

How did you like Wall-E, by the way?

Cale Says:

I was floored. Haven’t stopped talking about it all day. Although, think how even more amazing it would have been if they had kept the style of the first 45 min of the movie going till the end. Like what if there were never any humans speaking. What if you never found out what happened to them. What if the entire film was lonely and creepy, but still sweet. It could have been so epic. But still, I loved every second of it so hard. Pixar once again puts everyone else to shame with both their storytelling and animation. Also the sound engineering by Ben Burtt was brilliant.
