Brightest Young Things

It is the first week of January. You have blown all your hard(ly) earned cash on open bars that barely got you drunk, fancy new outfits to impress strangers with and presents for your family. What to do now that you have a date with that stranger you impressed over those open bar drinks and the paycheck is not rolling in till next Monday when you can finally take them to that Masa 14 dinner they (probably don't) deserve?
Well, as luck and geography would have it, you live in DC and impressing people comes at a very low cost.
So, here, a handy schedule to free movies to take yourself and other people to this week:
(Click on links for further details)

MONDAY

Where the Wild Things Are and Pirate Radio are both being shown tonight for 1 dollar each at Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse. WWTA is one of my hands down favorite movies of the 00s and Pirate Radio is definitely on the list of movies I wish I did not slack on during it's first run.

In the meantime, Black cat continues their "Drink and a Movie" series this week with 2 slices of cinematic heaven that happened before all things vampire ruled the world. Show up at 8 for 5 dollar Bloody Marys and a double feature of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer (featuring Kristy Swanson, Donald Sutherland AND Luke Perry) and Lost Boys (both Coreys, really lusciously locked Jason Patrick and Kiefer at the top of his bleach blonde mullett game)

TUESDAY
The Psychotronic Society is slacking on releasing their January schedule but if you show up to Warehouse at 8pm there is bound to be a showing of the weirdest movie you didn't know you'd see this week.

At the same time it is all wine coolers and angsty girls all night at the Black Cat with a free double feature of Little Darlings and (more Kristy Swanson!!!!) The Legend of Billie Jean

WEDNESDAY
"Drink and a Movie" wraps up with a noir double feature of The Thin Man and Topper and 5 dollar champagne cocktails to boot.

FRIDAY
The Iran Movie Festival brings us The Man Who Ate His Cherries at 7pm at Freer Sackler Galleries, in which a factory worker suffering from sexual impotence is forced to divorce his wife and pay her restitution in this film by Payman Haghani. In order to provide the money and prove that he is a ‎capable person, he has to consider his options. Remembering one of his co-workers who lost his fingers ‎while at work in a factory and who received compensation from the insurance company, he comes up with an idea.‎

SATURDAY
Brings us the double whammy of all art house double features:
At the African Art Museum (why there? not sure) starting at 1pm there is a showing of Godard's Breathless with the completely irresistable Jean Paul Belmondo and Jean Seaberg (with the haircut that made my Mother cut all her hair off within 2 hours of seeing it 40 years a go) and Last Year in Marienbad which I love so much I have already sung it's praises all over this website before.
Don't miss this.

If I missed something - let me know.

God loves a cheerful giver.

The Thin Man is terrific fun, and makes me want to booze in a way few movies do. Guess I'll be going Wednesday.

The Thin Man is pretty amazing. I may join you. Strangely enough I just watched The Legend of Billie Jean last week. Girl Power!

I can't help but join in on the Thin Man love. Hope I can make it.

that's unfortunate. but that amount of style being shown in that afternoon should really not be missed, no matter what the format

I don't think Kristy Swanson is in "Legend of Billie Jean"...that's the lovely Helen Slater. Also, please note that neither "Little Darlings" nor "Legend of Billie Jean" have been released on DVD (save for bootlegs), so this is a rare chance to see both films. And Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol were smokin' in 1980. D.I.Wine Coolers or die!

I ACTUALLY FEEL COMPLETELY ASHAMED FOR MISTAKING HELEN FOR KRISTY. This is the kind of stuff I never make mistakes about. Anyway-should be amazing regardless

billie jean last night was both terrible and awesome - did anyone else notice that Putter (the girl that gets her period in a gun fight, very awkward scene) is Yeardly Smith? aka the voice of Lisa Simpson?
