BYT Empire

Brightest Young Things

Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: "5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?" She doesn't give a shit. I also send a lot of "notes" to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I'll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, a dozen or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:

The Last Kiss
Granted I'm a little biased due to my bromosexual love for Zachy plus I haven't seen the original, but regardless I found this to be excellent.
4 Stars

Stevie
rent meeeeee amazing
5 Stars

Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers
Watch, stay for the credits, get angry, do something about it: http://iraqforsale.org/
4 Stars

Family Guy: Blue Harvest
Spectacular animation, writing, and voice work. Obviously a labor of love by a bunch of nerds. Obscure references galore, John Williams score, emmy nominated, awesomeness.
5 Stars

The Double Life of Veronique
Svetlana movie
4 Stars

Ratatouille
Another masterpiece from Brad Bird. Every frame just oozes with that quality and perfection that only Pixar seems to be able to pull off. Highly recommended.
5 Stars

Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Decided to become a Trekkie in prep for the new one, I've only seen a couple old ones before. While the first contains a cool story and some beautiful retro special effects, it's tedious and boring.
3 Stars

The Golden Compass
What the hell was this crap?
2 Stars

Michael Clayton
Ridiculously good. Brilliantly nuanced performances by all, and Robert Elswit's cinematography is worth the price of admission alone. Left me in stunned silence. 5 stars!
5 Stars

Y tu mamá también
hottest movie ever
5 Stars

Tekkon Kinkreet
It doesn't really make any sense, but it's still a fun watch and the atypical (for anime) animation style is beautiful.
4 Stars

C.R.A.Z.Y.
soooooo good
5 Stars

National Geographic: Guns, Germs and Steel
Jared Diamond's facinating theories on why throughout human history certain civillizations make it and others don't. The answer: cows. Well, there is more to it than that, but yeah, pretty much cows.
4 Stars

As someone who gets your Netflix Notes, I find them really helpful. Daniel Tosh is my hero now because of you, Cale.

Thanx - you sort of just made my weekend!

Seriously - we need to bring him to DC soon.

Ha, yes, William recommended to me and then I re-recommended to you.

Michael Clayton started off kinda slow and I wasn't really feeling it and then all of a sudden my head was exploding and stuff.

The first time I saw Y Tu Mama Tambien I had to pause it to have sex with my then girlfriend.

I said it once, and I'll say it again:
I’d still go gay for Zach Braff. All the way gay.

I think Last Kiss is a guy movie disguised as a chick flick, like Shopgirl.
