BYT Empire

Brightest Young Things

Svetlana and I are pretty obsessed with Netflix. I take the slightly more OCD route though by rating all my movies (between 1 and 5 stars) and rearranging my queue on an hourly basis. I will often berate her for giving odd ratings: "5 stars out of 5 for The Descent? Really?" She doesn't give a shit. I also send a lot of "notes" to friends, a Netflix feature that allows you to suggest movies to your friends via an up to 200 character mini review. Svetlana wishes I would channel all my Netflix energy into BYT. So at her request every once in a while I'll post some of my mini-reviews from the past 4+ years, a dozen or so at a time. Feel free to give me shit like I give her shit:

The Trials of Henry Kissinger
Not perfectly executed, but nevertheless compelling and frightfully relevant, could be tossed off as conspiracy nonsense and one sided if it wasn't for that pesky hard evidence
4 stars

The Omega Man
Quite possibly the most retarded movie ever made.
1 star

The Comedians of Comedy: The Movie
be sure to watch the special features... jesus
5 stars

Delicatessen
soooo good
5 stars

United 93
I avoided watching it for a week, knowing it was going to be emotionally taxing, but I still wasn't prepared for the horrific story that unfolded. Perhaps the most moving film I have ever seen.
5 stars

Children of Men
almost perfect
4 stars

Next
only worth watching so you can laugh at Nocolas Cage's hair
1 star

The Glamorous Life of Sachiko Hanai
A Jap low budget softcore porn (aka pink film) containing a cloned finger of Prez Bush, lot's of fake cum shots, gratuitous violence, and an unsettling rape scene. Not for everyone. Or anyone, really.
3 stars

South Park: Season 3
South Park Season 3 Disc 2 is where the series starts getting really good
5 stars

Maxed Out
Worth your watch instantly time
4 stars

Stardust
Pleasant enough afternoon waster, DeNiro and Gervais provide some pretty hilarious moments, but it's no Princess Bride.
3 stars

Helvetica
Perhaps my decade long love affair with typography heightened the enjoyment, but I think the classy presentation, interesting characters, and humor will still entertain those who don't give a shit.
4 stars

i wish more movies were as good as "delicatessen". miljan kljakovic kreka, who does all the sets for kusturica, did production design for it, and it is just mind-bogglingly amazing.

My recent ratings:

Night and the City. Jules Dassin directs this decent noir set in London. Too much Greco-Roman wrestling. 3 stars

Four Minutes. Severe Frau tutors brilliant prisoner at piano. Moving and intense. 4 stars

Friday Night. Largely wordless anonymous erotic encounter. Boring. 2 stars

Elevator to the Gallows. Louis Malle directs this entertaining French thriller. Cute little ending. 4 stars

Bomb It. Great documentary about graffiti. The best part are the different styles of various cities. 4 stars

A Room with a View. Merchant/Ivory adaptation of EM Forster novel. Decent, but a lot of unexpected male nudity. 3 stars

Secrets and Lies. Mike Leigh's carefully observed drama about a working class English family. 4 stars

Devil in a Blue Dress. Denzel Washington stars in this noir that mostly feels like a style exercise. 3 stars

King of Kong a Fistful of Quarters: 5 Stars
Executive Koala: 3 Stars ( I would of been more generous if there was more about the Koala's managing style at the pickle factory).

Delicatessan is one of my all-time favorites along with City of Lost Children (by the same French directors, Jeunet & Caro). It has a similar feel to Delicatessan but I don't know if Kljakovic did the art direction for it.
