Pan Kun, a chimp from Japan, and his bulldog friend James are (were?) stars of a couple hit television shows overseas. The premise usually involves Pan Kun learning how to do some sort of human task like making ramen noodle, using a photobooth, buying groceries, taking care of James’ puppies, etc. He often completes these tasks all by himself in a display of astonishing problem solving ability. Sure, some slick editing could be at work here, but regardless he seems to be an exceptionally intelligent little chimp. And so adorable I could die. Just watch:
Apparently Pan Kun now belongs to a zoo and does stage shows. One hopes he is being treated well. As a card carrying member of the Jane Goodall Institute’s Chimpanzee Guardian Program, I should frown upon any use of chimps as entertainment, but I believe Pan Kun could inspire more to join causes that help protect chimps from poachers.
