Brightest Young Things

Talking Heads happen to be my favorite band of all time, so I am a little biased here, but objectively I still firmly believe Stop Making Sense, the 1984 film by David Byrne and Jonathan Demme, is the quintissential concert movie. Yes, better than the Last Waltz. The scary part is, it's not even the best aural document of live Talking Heads, for that see:

yet it's still the best.  Everything oozes awesomeness, from the titles by Pablo Ferro (Dr. Strangelove) at the start to not revealing the audience till the end.  There is a slow build of momentum by adding more musicians and set design with each song.  There is the famous big suit.  There is Bernie Worrell pounding out synth lines.  There is gorgeous 5.1 surround sound on the DVD special edition plus great extras.  Needless to say, it's a must see.

The film will be presented (for free!) by the Library of Congress tonight, all the details here:

Byrne wanted to avoid colored lighting throughout the film, and one of the most striking examples of this is What a Day That Was.  This song comes from the underappreciated 1981 Catherine Wheel soundtrack.  Enjoy:

Stop Making Sense is hands down my favorite concert film. What a classic. I love doing the Wartime dance.

As a concert film, Stop Making Sense cannot be beat. But in terms of performance of songs from the first four albums, Rome 1980 is soooooooooo much better. Apparently it's coming out on DVD. For now you can just YouTube it.
