So, this week, we're doing personal cult favorites which means I have an excuse to talk about Kusturica. Amen.
One of the (many) points of pride about living and breathing in Yugoslavia for the first 20 years of my life is that Emir Kusturica did some of his best work during that time:
The Time of The Gypsies, While Father Was Away, Black Cat White Cat, and of course, Underground.
Which is a movie as a poem and metaphor and magical realism fairy tale for what living for 50 years under communism was like.
It is stunning and funny and difficult and everything a movie should be (when William gave me this DVD for Christmas one year, I knew we would be friends) and sets by Miljan Kljakovic Kreka (who also did "Delicatessen") and it also features a soundtrack by Goran Bregovic who is nothing short of a master of ethnic pathos.

God loves a cheerful giver.
I imagine this is life on in a daily basis in every single former Soviet-bloc country. Daily basis.
last time I checked former Yugoslavia was not part of the Soviet bloc. But yes-pretty much every day in Eastern Europe is at least a little like this
Just a little.
