REFLECTING ON THE CHICAGO CONSPIRARCY TRIAL

Thursday, January 22, 2009    7:00 PM

The 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago became the focal point for massive demonstrations prompted by one of this country’s most politically tumultuous years. The protest, later considered a police riot, resulted in the indictment of activists and police officers, and a drawn-out political show trial. During this time, Richard Avedon photographed members of the Chicago Seven—as the activists were later dubbed— and others associated with the trial. From the Corcoran’s stage Tom Hayden of the Chicago Seven and Leonard Weinglass, one of their defense attorneys, discuss the trial and their reactions to being photographed by Avedon.

Cool?
Definitely cool.

Because I'm a gardenia, watching my weight, and Richard Avedon would surely approve.

Thanks Malkmus.

very cool! i love avedon's work and being a political junkie would love to hear from one of the Chicago Seven about their experience and being photographed by such an iconic artist. its interesting how the Chicago Seven are embraced and expressed in more artistic terms with the animated film last summer and avedon's photos than other politicians or events...

Because politics and photography are two of my favorite obsessions and this is a marriage of the best of both.

because I am probably the only person who regularly reads this site who is old enough to remember them. c'mon-I'm too old for most of the downtown parties so give an old girl a night out!

because we are at a crux in our political history. because we should remember that protest and dissent is inherent and necessary to a progressive culture and future.
