God loves a cheerful giver.
friday night, saturday morning.
or too drunk to fuck.
or both. concurrently.
Dancing with myself! (and too drunk to fuck)
(it's my girlfriend's birthday and she loves this band! help me out, byt, or i might really end up dancing with myself!)
The Weight, obvi.
p.s. contest is open to non-nouvelle vague covers as well
seu jorge w/ life on mars .... i remember reading that he wasn't quite sure how to translate a lot of the lyrics to the various bowie songs, so he just made up stuff that 'felt right,' which sounds perfect
Sorry for Laughing
do covers of traditional prison songs count?
(also, I should get a bonus b/c 4/5 of the people featured here are currently dead *and* for possibly pissing off anyone that might be reading this that hates hippies.)
The guy on the American Idol covering Paula Adbul's Straight Up. That was genius.
If we're speaking of Nouvelle then
Dancing with Myself
It's gotta be Fischerspooner covering "Fascinating," an obscure REM song from a few years back. Both versions are linked up here (first one Fisherspooner, audio only, then the original REM version below): http://stereogum.com/archives/fischerspooner-cover-obscure-rem-song-fascinated_066331.html.
Enjoy--and pick me please!
too drunk to fuck ftw
"dancing with myself" and for a non NV "Plans" by Band of Horses
This is crazy, as I've been listening to Nouvelle Vague's cover of "the killing moon" over and over again this past week. "Making Plans for Nigel" is what got me hooked on them, though. Overall I think my favorite cover is Gnarls Barkley's "Gone Daddy Gone" since it's a perfect mix of a strange musical combination and respect for the original song.
My favorite two songs are "In a Manner of Speaking" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZilC3ldN84&feature=related) and "Fade to Grey" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bweLAbtGo-g)...these are paired with my memory of laying in bed, half-comatose after getting my wisdom teeth removed, surrounded by 10 speakers playing Nouvelle Vague on repeat. beautiful.
There are so many good covers it is hard to pick just one.
But in the spirit of Nouvelle Vague I'm going to say the Ben Folds cover of She Don't Use Jelly:
PS - I really want these tickets. My girl is a Francophile who tends to speak exclusively in giggly French when inebriated.
Fiona Apple covering Across the Universe, hands down.
But as far as Nouvelle Vague goes, Too Drunk to Fuck.
Making Plans for Nigel all the waaaaay!
I can't believe no one's said "Dance With Me!" That song is basically the reason why I got any in 2007. Also, the video is genius - they slowed down a dance clip from Bande a Part to fit the song:
The goth in me wants to say that their cover of Bela Lugosi's Dead is my favorite but it's really Grauzone's Eisbaer.
And give me the ticket! Or else! Stuff!
Le Tigre's cover of I'm So Excited.
You cannot deny its awesomeness.
Exlovers cover of the ever classic Wicked Games by Chris Isaak.
'Dance With Me' hands down! I love this song and I love the video even more.
If you give me a ticket I promise to learn this dance for the show...!
this is not a love song, or too drunk to fuck, cant decide...
Bitches Ain't Shit by Ben Folds (Dr. Dre)
for non-nouvelle vague, jeff buckley's "hallelujah" hands down.
for nouvelle vague, "too drunk to fuck" for sure.
Benny and The Jets a la the Beastie Boys.
Teenage Kicks originally by The Undertones, covered by Nouvelle Vague.
