Last time Devendra Banhart was in town I cried. Hell, everyone at that show cried: women, children, grown men, barefoot hippies-it was that beautiful. It was probably one of my favorite music experience ever.
In great news: Devendra has a new record out and IS COMING TO 930 CLUB NEXT WEEK (Wednesday before Thanksgiving).
We have 2 pairs of tickets to give away to a show that will indubitably change your life and to enter to win leave a comment about the best live music show you’ve ever attended (saying why would help your case)

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Single greatest live music show I’ve ever seen.
November 20, 2009 at 2:47 pmI saw the Mars Volta when I used to live in Milwaukee in this cavernous sound wrecking ballroom called the rave. I dont know if you know anything about the Mars Volta live, but they made up for it by just being as loud as they possibly could. really. loud.
it was right after Amputechture came out (underrated) and the show not only blew my eardrums but also my mind. they were pretty uncharacteristically laid back, cedric just danced with the mic stand as if it was his latin lover and omar’s guitar spoke to all of the high on life minds in the crowd. there was also plenty of great dancing involved.
needless to say, an out of body experience.
November 20, 2009 at 3:00 pmwilco at bonnaroo 2007, absolutely. i’m sure my altered state of mind had a decent amount to do with it, but it was also the first time i was seeing my favorite band live. fucking amazing.
November 20, 2009 at 3:13 pmHas anyone else seen The Flaming Lips live!?!? Jesus Christ. Literally. Definitely NOT the most life changing musically, but the accoutrement are absolutely ridiculous. First, the band members come out of a virtual VAGINA. Then, Mark is birthed from said vagina in a ball that comes out to the audience. Literally he’s in a big clear ball rolling around on top of people with a video camera. Then, as if there’s a void you didn’t know needed to be filled… Groups of furries and plushies that appear to have come from a Fetish night of some sort come out and dance for you. All the while confetti and balloons of all sizes are being thrown into the audience.
I even have a shirt that says, “I saw The Flaming Lips and it changed my life.”
But can I have two entries? Because my second entry, and probably my most favorite, would be the time I saw Toots and the Maytals at 930 and then got to hang out on their party bus with them. Holler. I was a groupie and they didn’t seem to even notice I was there, but I was a poor student and Toots gave me free beer.

November 20, 2009 at 3:17 pmDaft Punk, Alive 2007, Brooklyn, NY. Baseball stadium turned giant dance party. It was the show they made a film out of for the mash-up of Around the World & Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.
The light show of the triangles, fiber-optic backdrop, the pyramid, and the side screens alone were captivating. On top of incredible mash-ups, and an enthusiastic crowd, life-changing.
November 20, 2009 at 3:20 pmTilly and the Wall at Black Cat was an amazing experience. It felt like I was in some kind of happy bubble filled with candy, with the lights and dancing and the percussionist/tapdancer just freaking GROOVING the whole time. They also all smile the whole time, you can’t help but smile yourself.
November 20, 2009 at 3:27 pmMRD wins. There is no better live show than Daft Punk. No moment more transcendent than tens of thousands of people dancing all around you, every facet of your sensory experienced plugged in and manipulated by those crazy robots and their mesmerizing pyramid.
November 20, 2009 at 3:35 pmCut Copy at 9:30 last spring. This girll was rubbin on my d the whole show!
November 20, 2009 at 4:09 pmscratch that, CL wins
November 20, 2009 at 4:22 pmThursday @ CBGBs circa 2005. 100 person venue, was when war all the time was touring, fucking blew my face off, one of the greatest performances I’ve seen, the place became completely silent for “This song brought to you by a falling bomb” and you could just feel so much radiating from Geoff Rickly, absolutely electric.
November 20, 2009 at 4:44 pmI fell in love at the last Dears show. That counts for something at least.
November 20, 2009 at 5:18 pmAnnihilation Time played the bridge show at SXSW this last year. Basic deal is bands play on a bridge around 2am, and it was them, the Vivian Girls, and Trash Talk. Once Annihilation Time started playing, members of them were hurling boxes of converse shoes into the audience since I guess they were sponsored by them. So people were leaping over, and on each other while batting around and re-hurling footwear. In addition to shoes, there were also a few cymbals flying towards the end, and I saw a mic stand launch about 15 feet in the air like a backyard baking soda bottle rocket. It was like a strange kids game, running around and throwing objects and giggling like idiots, except we were all (mostly) drunk adults. After the set the singer was walking around and having us drink from this bag of wine he was carrying around.
The band was pretty good too!
November 20, 2009 at 5:39 pmJemina Pearl opened for Islands at First Unitarian Church in Philly. She belted her very own “I hate people” which was recorded with Iggy on the album. A personal favorite. (deeply favorite, actually). After that song some douchebag guy in front of me yelled, “You’re mediocre!” to Jemina which prompted me to punch him. Well. He punched me back. In the fucking eye.
What made this show epic for me was that later on I showed up at the merch table (with a now black eye). I peered at Jemina’s shirt for this tour “Round 2″ featuring her face with a black eye and a cigarette. She told me, “Any woman worth a damn has had a black eye. I’ve had three.”
November 21, 2009 at 12:14 amany gratefuldead cover band while trippin balls playin some hack n djembe
November 21, 2009 at 8:39 pmKing Sunny Ade at this year’s Bonnaroo. The 11 or so dudes on stage, all of whom sang as well as played instruments, simply embodied the music. They and the music were one. Also, there was this one part where two women who had the biggest butts of all time were dancing — I swear they were like half butt — and then King Sunny Ade made love to one of them by playing a guitar solo for her. It was the most sexual thing I’ve ever seen, and no one took any clothes off.
November 22, 2009 at 10:13 amThe Raveonettes show at the 9:30 club. This band is generally one of the greatest bands ever, but live; that was like the greatest experience ever. Sharin Foo is an amazing vocalist and she’s just as great live as she is on the album. I mean wow. So Great! plus the lights really added to the experience!
November 22, 2009 at 1:46 pmwell when i saw Tonic open for Fastball at Jaxx, i got hand-raped by three monster energy drink street team girls. Tonic hit the stage and played a rendition of Fleetwood and Macs Go Your Own way that would cause even the Johnest of Waynes to cry.
November 22, 2009 at 6:17 pmblack rebel motorcycle club @ 9.30. The new stuff wasn’t bad, but then they slipped into the old tunes, rocked out in the most chill way ever – smoked the whole time – and then there was an epic strobe light show.
November 22, 2009 at 10:35 pmme gusta y quiero verlo….. si!
November 23, 2009 at 12:48 amplease and thank you!
November 23, 2009 at 2:42 amWu-Tang Clan with Rage Against the Machine at Merriweather in 1997. My first non-classsical show. This blew my mind.
I feel just like a child!!!!
November 23, 2009 at 10:52 amI have rather fond memories of mogwai + bardo pond back in 2001 at 930 club, when they blew out the sound system during the final encore when both bands came out to form a super explosive wall of noise. I couldn’t hear properly for 4 days afterwards, but it was worth it.
November 24, 2009 at 8:53 amA few weeks ago, I took my shirt off and played tambourine on stage to Music Is My Boyfriend at the Hidden Cameras show. I’m a female and I am NOT a skinny bitch, if you know what I mean. I feel like any show where I feel moved enough to get naked is fucking amazing. (Alcohol wasn’t involved, either.)
That being said, my favorite show of recent years would be Akron/Family at Haverford College in 2005. The show was in a sweaty basement and last hours, the crowd was really into it, and the band was just magical. This was still when they sat in chairs while performing but through the course of the performance the became more animated and got up and screamed, danced, and literally ripped their clothes off. A few days later, they played Iota in Arlington and Miles took his pants off and hung from the ceiling. As ridiculous as those shows were, they were also magical in a very serious way.
The best shows I’ve been to in my life were the punk and ska shows I saw as a teenager growing up in Central Virginia. I remember completely crazy and amazing shit going down at Pietasters shows 10-12 years ago; I remember feeling this sense of wonderment at being in the middle of such a drunken collective event. Those shows changed my life.
November 24, 2009 at 9:45 amHands down, the best live show I’ve ever seen was The Books. We gathered in a dark Vermont auditorium, one hundred people and the patter of rain on the roof. With the most unassuming setup, two guys, a guitar, a cello and a video screen. How could a band who based their entire musical worth on sampled
material put on a live show? With an amazig series of videos timed for their performance that’s how. Granted some of our minds may have been a little altered, but never before had the beauty of a myriad of men tipping their hats been so evident. Of gossiping women, or of crying children. All of the smallest moments were gathered into one Smorgasbord of understanding. Songs that you (or maybe just
me) knew all the words to took on new meaning, and a cover of Nick Drake’s cello
song nearly moved me to tears. Two guys, in one room showed me that you don’t need to create beauty out of nothing, there is so muh exquisite material all around us, ripe for the picking.
oh no, I’m late! but put me in if there are tix still not yet given away.
the best live show: bonnie ‘prince’ billy at the black cat, ‘i see a darkness’ tour about a month or two before the album came out. oldham was making jokes that weren’t funny, just strange and sort of scary because nobody laughed, but the band was amazing, the harmonies, everything. saw him again a few times but never the same experience as that show.
cheers!
i would have to say because i’m am a magnificent indian lady, i dance like a lady broseph in the best way possible, i love beards, and i enjoyed deerhoof 3 years ago at black cat and loved the magical rainbow machine for the first time and i’m drank right now. sorry i’m late?

Seeing OK Go, Sparta, Flogging Molly, and Andrew WK at the now defunct Boathouse in Norfolk, VA. It was a rock-your-face-off to the max, and all was well and dandy until Andrew WK jumped into the crowd, fell, and took me to the ground with him. My elbow swelled to the size of a tennis ball, and his blood was on my shirt. Life was never the same afterwards, in the best way.
