Camera Obscura have been making top-notch happy music for sad people for YEARS now and hot on the heels of the really well received “My Maudlin Career” they’re playing 930 club THIS SUNDAY.
I’ve seen them live before, and interviewed them before and you want to go, trust me.
Anyway-we have two pairs of tickets to give away to this, so tell us what your favorite happy or sad or happy/sad song is in the comments and you could win them.
The winner will be notified by COB Thursday.
Cool?

Sad Song: Thinking of You by Katy Perry

Happy Endings by Pulp — “And I know no oooonnnnne can ever know which way to head…” kills me every time.
June 15, 2009 at 2:22 pmThis morning the first song that came up on shuffle was “So Sorry” by Feist. It’s a pretty shitty song to start out your soul-sucking (Monday morning) office job, getting bathed in post-breakup nostalgia/regret.
But then I saw a family of 5, all wearing matching orange “WASHINGTON DC” shirts, hopping on the metro. The eldest teenage son (sporting a sweet, unironic jet-black bowl cut) looked utterly humiliated.
So in a way I got a nice contrast of sadness and happiness that I didn’t belong to that tourist family, and then another small tinge of ennui as I watched the bowl cut bob up and down in front of me.
June 15, 2009 at 2:45 pmDays by the Kinks, happy and sad
June 15, 2009 at 6:40 pmMy sad AND happy song is “The Scientist” by Coldplay. This song made me hope for better days when I just started high school. I had braces and 1 inch thick high-lights (which I did to humor my mom, good deed right? NO! They turned yellowish orange, no joke.) which would not grow out after at least a year and a half. So I always associated that feeling with the song until I got my first boyfriend a few years later. The only song he knew to play on guitar was “The Scientist” because it has pretty easy notes. That quickly became “our song.”
Cheese-fest over.
I feel a mid 20’s awkward stage coming on (no excuse to act like a teen? Should I reaaallly be worrying about bills?) so I’m in dire need of a song to associate it with…

June 16, 2009 at 12:36 pmGreat question and some cool suggestions already. My nominations:
Happy song: “Float On” by Modest Mouse
(we hit a police car, lose a job and all our money, and yet we’re all still OK)
Sad song: “You Had Time” by Ani DiFranco
(devastating lyrics, haunting guitar and piano)
sounds very Happy but is actually Sad: “O L’Amour” by Erasure
(great dance song that seems to be all about love, but lyrics tell about a guy with a broken heart)
very, very Sad song that gives you a glimmer of Hope in the last two lines: “Stacks” by Bon Iver
Happy/Sad song: “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie
(romantic, comforting, and morbid all at once)
Sleepyhead by Passion Pit (Morning Procrastination Happy)
Skinny Love by Bon Iver (Great Moments Gone)
My Girls by Animal Collective (Vitalize the Night)
June 16, 2009 at 8:28 pm“a Warning Sign” by Coldplay. lets be honest as much as people who are into good music hate them, Coldplay makes good happy/sad music
Also “The park” by Feist, and Ray Lamontagne’s “Empty”
just sad. . . not happy.
