Camera Obscura have been making top-notch happy music for sad people for YEARS now and hot on the heels of the really well received "My Maudlin Career" they're playing 930 club THIS SUNDAY.
I've seen them live before, and interviewed them before and you want to go, trust me.
Anyway-we have two pairs of tickets to give away to this, so tell us what your favorite happy or sad or happy/sad song is in the comments and you could win them.
The winner will be notified by COB Thursday.
Cool?

Knee-Deep at ATP by Los Campesinos!

and appropriately, the title is a variation on a camera obscura title.
The Cure "A Few Hours After This"...from back when you were just knee high to a grasshopper.
perfect day by Lou Reed
mates of state- get better always cheers me up!
Definitely has to be "Today" by Jefferson Airplane
Not only happy/sad, but a relatively depressing love song.
Genius!
currently.... A More Uncertain future - Love Is All
The happiest of happy songs: Feelin' Groovy by Simon and Garfunkel
Happy Song: Lettin' Go by Janelle Monáe
-She lost her job, but she's gonna party anyway... perfect getting ready song, perfect optimistic song, perfect song to help get over the bad shizz
Sad Song: Thinking of You by Katy Perry
-She broke up with her bf, and has gotten a rebound, but no matter what she does, she can't stop thinking about bf number 1... for all of those who have ever had to deal with that uncomfortable post break up phase, this song really brings the waterworks... =/
Happy Endings by Pulp -- "And I know no oooonnnnne can ever know which way to head..." kills me every time.
This morning the first song that came up on shuffle was "So Sorry" by Feist. It's a pretty shitty song to start out your soul-sucking (Monday morning) office job, getting bathed in post-breakup nostalgia/regret.
But then I saw a family of 5, all wearing matching orange "WASHINGTON DC" shirts, hopping on the metro. The eldest teenage son (sporting a sweet, unironic jet-black bowl cut) looked utterly humiliated.
So in a way I got a nice contrast of sadness and happiness that I didn't belong to that tourist family, and then another small tinge of ennui as I watched the bowl cut bob up and down in front of me.
Days by the Kinks, happy and sad
My sad AND happy song is "The Scientist" by Coldplay. This song made me hope for better days when I just started high school. I had braces and 1 inch thick high-lights (which I did to humor my mom, good deed right? NO! They turned yellowish orange, no joke.) which would not grow out after at least a year and a half. So I always associated that feeling with the song until I got my first boyfriend a few years later. The only song he knew to play on guitar was "The Scientist" because it has pretty easy notes. That quickly became "our song."
Cheese-fest over.
I feel a mid 20's awkward stage coming on (no excuse to act like a teen? Should I reaaallly be worrying about bills?) so I'm in dire need of a song to associate it with...
"Just Like Heaven"- The Cure
happy/sad.
Happy - "Yea, Yeah", Matt & Kim
Sad- "Pyramid Song", Radiohead
Great question and some cool suggestions already. My nominations:
Happy song: "Float On" by Modest Mouse
(we hit a police car, lose a job and all our money, and yet we're all still OK)
Sad song: "You Had Time" by Ani DiFranco
(devastating lyrics, haunting guitar and piano)
sounds very Happy but is actually Sad: "O L'Amour" by Erasure
(great dance song that seems to be all about love, but lyrics tell about a guy with a broken heart)
very, very Sad song that gives you a glimmer of Hope in the last two lines: "Stacks" by Bon Iver
Happy/Sad song: "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie
(romantic, comforting, and morbid all at once)
Sleepyhead by Passion Pit (Morning Procrastination Happy)
Skinny Love by Bon Iver (Great Moments Gone)
My Girls by Animal Collective (Vitalize the Night)
"a Warning Sign" by Coldplay. lets be honest as much as people who are into good music hate them, Coldplay makes good happy/sad music
Also "The park" by Feist, and Ray Lamontagne's "Empty"
just sad. . . not happy.
oh and for the just happy ones, I would have to say "Tonight I have to Leave it" by shout out louds. and "Transatlantique" by Beirut
Happy - Natalie Portman's Shaved Head - Beard Lust
Sad - Johnny Cash - Ballad of Ira Hayes
Happy/Sad - Tracy Byrd - Ten Rounds with Jose Cuervo
Best Happy/Sad Song: Merle Haggard's "Mama Tried"
(and - oh! - that hat! those wrinkles! that swagger!)
Best Happy/Song by Camera Obscura, whom I love very much: "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken"
(and the video cites "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg", which makes it amazeballs)
last christmas--wham!
