Prom!

Prom!

March 26, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Cale is DJing this prom thing tonight. From what I understand it is a marketing ploy to promote “Prom Night” the movie (I’ve seen the preview and I’m totally going, but then I’m also really excited about the new “Sisterhood of the Travelling pants” movie) but it does involve free things, The Onion, Us and being able to dress up on a school night.

Now, I love (the concept of) prom so much that even though I skipped a year of high school (show off!) I went back my freshman year of college so I could go to my senior dance (whether this makes me pathetic or awesome or both, I don’t know and I don’t care).

I remember it as though it was yesterday: my date was this 6′6″ kid (I wanted to wear heels!) who was the captain of our basketball team and had to have his suit made specially since his inseam was too long. He is now an engineer and runs my hometown’s equivalent of BYT (loosely transleted from Serbian “Where to tonight?”) and is still one of the funniest people I know.
Also: My dress slid up and my bright red underwear got exposed to the entire faculty table and my Dad still makes fun of the car I was picked up in.
It was magical.

Now, I offered Cale to make a playlist but he refused because he is “too busy” (getting his DJ stuff ready or frosting his tips or color coordinating corsages, I don’t know) so I decided to do something.

Yay for me.
And for you.
But really mainly for me.

And what I decided to do is this: NOT pick prom songs (does anyone remember that Vitamin C atrocity?) or just prom movie but PICK PROM SONGS AND SCENES FROM PROM MOVIES.

Now, we’re talking.
Take a walk down awkward adolescence lane via the miracle of youtube and my “able to pack all sort of useless info in” brain.

Ready?

I’ll kick off with something classy and “Playground love” from Virgin Suicides. You know, the last time Lisbon sisters had fun. Ever.
Plus, what was the name of Josh Hartnett’s character?
Because it was something perfect.

after that, the only way to go is from 70s to the 80s and what would that be without:

a. Pretty in Pink
Melt with it.

and

b. Teen Witch
You know this girl ended up dating Jason Priestly from 90210 in real life?
I was ten and the most jealous I ever was or will be in my life.

moving swiftly onto the 90s and the circa-1995 teen movie boom:

Ten Things I hate about you
Heath Ledger’s break out role!
Julia Stiles! As annoying as ever!
Joseph Gordon Levitt, right before he became hot!
And Letters to Cleo singing at your prom!

She’s all that
And that kick-ass dance along to Rockefeller Skank.
As dj-ed by Usheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

as well as that godforsaken “Kiss me” song by Sixpence none the richer, which I loved (because I am a girl, OK?) but then discovered that they were christian rock or something, and had to go cold turkey to get un-addicted from.

and “Erase and Rewind” by the Cardigans as utilized by Cradle Robber patron saint Drew Barrymore in “Never Been Kissed”
during the “Meant for each other” themed prom (famous couples through history!!!!)

and now that you are overdosed on all that sugar, the two movies that made “Prom Night” possible:

Carrie:
(here cut to “Ballroom blitz” which is kinda cheesy, but fitting)

and

“Prom Night” -the original which I own, and which wins hands down for best DVD cover I’ve seen all year: Jamie Lee Curtis with Tiara, Bouqet, and a bloody axe. Plus, Leslie Nielsen’s in it. As Jamie’s dad. And the school principal.
It also features a banging disco out-of-print soundtrack which is now one of those things people fight over.
Or become your friends so they could steal it.
Sadly, the new “Prom Night” is not a remake of this slasher fest but hey, nobody’s perfect.

Pick.your.favorites.

isn’t it weird that for most of the brightest young things, it’s been a decade since you’re original prom? …just a thought
