Gun Ban Playlist

Gun Ban Playlist

March 18, 2008 by Cale Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Guns are bad m’kay.

Here at BYT we could write up an informed opinion piece on gun control to coincide with the buzz around the Supreme Court tackling the constitutionality of DC’s gun ban today. But instead, we just made a playlist of songs about guns. Cause that’s the kind of quality BYT reporting you’ve come to know and love.

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - Nancy Sinatra
HOT.

Gun Street Girl - Tom Waits
One of my all time favorite Tom Waits tracks. Brilliant. If you don’t own Rain Dogs, stop what you’re doing right now and go buy it, listen to it on repeat every day for a week. Possibly in the top 10 greatest albums of all time.

Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Check out the ridiculously detailed wikipedia article on this song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Joe

Big Man With A Gun - Nine Inch Nails
Back in high school I did some sort of report on this album, I don’t really remember what it was about, but I do remember part of it involved me playing March Of The Pigs on a stereo for the class. Also I used to crank this song up as the background music while I played Quake. I was a loser. But this album is not. At all.

With A Gun - Steely Dan
Check out my Steely Dan love here:

Guns of Brixton - Nouvelle Vague
One of the few Nouvelle Vague covers I really like.

Get Your Guns - Nine Black Alps
These guys are awesome, this is from the album Everything Is. Thanx Grace!

Gunpowder & Lead - Miranda Lambert
I had this left over from the domestic violence playlist: My indie cred doesn’t quite allow me to enjoy this tune, but if you’re only going to listen to one top 40 country track this year, this should probably be it.

Don’t Take Your Guns To Town - Johnny Cash
Folsom Prison Blues was too easy

Babies With Guns - Aesop Rock
Although this song is not the best Aesop has to offer, the Bazooka Tooth album as a whole is pretty fantastic.

Kids With Guns - Gorillaz
I bet you haven’t listened to this album in a while, whip it out again, it’s so god damn good.

Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Beatles
Sometime I have to stop listening to the Beatles for a while cause it makes everything else seem so weak.

Son Of A Gun - Vaselines
One of the handful of Vaselines songs that Nirvana covered. If you don’t already have it, go over to Amazon and pick up the DRM-free mp3 album “The Way Of The Vaselines: A Complete History” for $8.99.

Barrel Of A Gun - Depeche Mode
Honestly, I don’t even like Depeche Mode that much. I mean, have you actually stopped and listened to their lyrics? It is embarrassing. “Just like a rainbow you know you set me free” Good lord!
But yeah, I still like a handful of songs and own like 20 DM albums.

As always, add your suggestion below, or weigh in on the current event spectacular!

great playlist!!

crazy that you blasted NIN as background music to Quake since Michael T. Reznor did infact make the real background music for Quake

that Nancy Sinatra song is the coolest thing since….something else really cool. And hot.

Also-playlist making is the new live blogging.

Cale Says:

Right, I actually meant Quake II!

N. Says:

wow you played Quake, I was a UT kid.

March 18, 2008 at 4:16 pm
Cale Says:

I ran my own Quake II server out of the dorm room in college that would adjust the amount of bots depending on how many real players were on. Yet somehow I still got laid.

I dug UT as well. Capture the flag was great. But I was a fan of the grittiness of the id software titles. I haven’t really played anything in the past 6 years or so except I picked up Doom III when it came out, ohmygod, scariest game ever. Output to my 60″ TV and surround sound, turned off all the lights, could only play for like 20 min at a time.

Oh, and those Half-Life games were good too.

Shit. Hold on a minute…

Cale Says:

Oh yeah - best. game. ever.

I was thinking ‘Big Exit’ by PJ Harvey. Or that Audio Bully’s song that samples Nancy Sinatra.

March 18, 2008 at 4:59 pm
Cale Says:

Good call, Big Exit rocks. Dunno the other one.

Gestapo!

I personally find few songs as therapeutic as Mission of Burma’s “That’s When I Reach for My Revolver.”

March 18, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Cale Says:

Dammit, when I was brainstorming this I thought of that but then forgot to upload. Duh. Classic.
