Myself and the ELM boys have come a long way since we took a risk on a Caribbean dancehall that was a bit off the beaten path for your average nightcrawler. Six months later, we are throwing our biggest party yet with one of the most important living legends in house music. This event means more to me in more ways than one...
As a young aspiring DJ while attending college in upstate New York, I stumbled upon the vast genre and culture of deep house (and eventually disco, classics, etc.) by buying lots of records through the mail and through sporadic trips to record stores in NYC. Through these experiences and interactions, as well as records that bore a fallout logo, the Shelter was a reference point that kept nagging at my curiousity. When I turned 21 in 2004, I had my first Shelter experience at the 39th St. location and my life would be forever changed. The size of the sweaty club, the impressive dancers and especially the soundsystem and the dreadlocked man controlling it blew me away.
Fast forward to this summer. Despite relocating the club to a smaller location two years ago, it shut down in July. It unfortunately has not relocated or reopened. Since returning to the United States in 2006, my trips up to New York on the 5am bus on Sundays for the Shelter experience rejuvenated my love for soulful house and inspired me to take my craft and the rich culture of dance music seriously.
Summing this all up in a few short words, Timmy Regisford is my favorite DJ.
On a ligher note, we are giving away two seperate guest spots for Saturday's party. Give us your best knock-knock joke in the comments section and we'll pick a winner!!!
