Brightest Young Things

Of Montreal and James Husband (also of Of Montreal but now with a solo record too) are playing 930 club this Thursday. It is always an insane time.

DF08_10.9_OfMontreal@930-56

Instead of tickets (we don't have any to give unfortunately) we'd like to giveaway a 180 gram vinyl version James Husband's new album, A Parallax I, along with the entire of Montreal Skeletal Lamping Collection (t-shirts, lamps, vinyl, CDs, stickers, a pony?), to one lucky winner.

of_montreal-skeletal_lamping-collection

It'll be like Christmas after Christmas. But cooler.

Anyway, to win, we will need you to leave a comment telling us why you love Of Montreal and we will notify the winner Thursday, the morning of the show.

Cool? Cool.

God loves a cheerful giver.

If there was one job I could ever want more, it would be the chance to be one of their performance artists. You guys are the shit and I drove 18 hours (from Tampa, FL to Chicago!) with 3 friends to see you play at Lollapalooza last year and even if I hadn't seen any other bands play, I would have been content!

Hoping I can find some way to make it up (from FL) to GA for your 3day show coming up!!

I have loved of Montreal for many years now. I have followed them and gone to many of their shows during each tour. In October 2008, I met the band! Bryan and I "shmoozed" on the streets of New York City and Nina Twin explained to me the origin of the name Alabee. The reason I love of Montreal so much is because each of their songs have a lyrics that help me emotionally. The Past if a Grotesque Animal has helped me through the most troubling times in my life, in the hospital and recovering from an incurable disease, as well as many other smaller issues--from relationships to family. I can relate to so many lyrics; Kevin's poetry/lyrics are beautiful and the way he performs on stage is wonderful!

Okay lets get this straight. I am a very poor Irish student that is obsessed with Kevin Barnes and Co. They very rarely come to these shores and the two times that i was legally able to go see them play i did! While (wrathfully) pinned to a speaker (of mist) at one of their shows, i was near deafened. Its the closest i have ever come to bleeding from my ears just for the sake of sounds. I think i deserve this prize due to the amount of time, effort and DESIRE i put into being a fan of this band. I also want to name my daughter Alabee. OH, deal clencher: I mistakenly have made love while Skeletal Lamping was playing in the background. That is some tough amount of beat changes to keep pace with i will have you know. But ya know no matter where we are, we're always touching by underground wires. Peace out.

For me, Kevin Barnes is one of those artists of whom I can’t help but stand in quiet awe. I admire his relentlessness, enduring years with little recognition, his seemingly endless reservoir of inspiration, never allowing the gears to stop turning. He’s always reinventing himself and pushing the boundaries, whether or not it will satisfy the listeners’ expectations of what they think they want to hear. I confess, I'm a pretty jaded music listener, and often times it's hard to feel genuinely excited about a band. But I never have that trouble with of Montreal. I couldn't thank oM enough for all the enjoyment and inspiration I've gotten out of their music. Best of all I get to see them tonight in Baltimore. Thanks for reading.

I love of Montreal because their music is true art. In a world full of self proclaimed "artists", of Montreal is one of the few bands I see that stand by artistic integrity. Accessibility, fame, etc. isn't what they're about. It's the music.

2 years ago Mark said

I love Of Montreal because they can effortlessly flip directions, stylistically, in the blink of an eye. The band (and Kevin)'s direction and progression as artists is always in motion. They never do the same thing twice.

I think Skeletal lamping was the most underated album of '08. OM has the uncanny ability to take a seemingly degenerate song(s) and make the sexy and smart. (ie: gallery piece, For Our Elegant Caste, St. Exquisite's Confessions). All of this on top of a live show (party really), make them one of the most exciting bands to date.

"So, I'm calling yo ass up at 3 in the morning like, "wake up young dragon, let's go get comprimised"" -> fucking brilliant

2 years ago Dave said

They've given me two of my favorite concert moments ever:

At Free Press Summer Fest last August in Houston, Kevin Barnes came out after a costume change with a huge bunch of balloons of different colors. Barnes quipped, before launching into the next song: "These rainbow balloons don't symbolize anything... except post-race. post-gender, post-everything." Husband chimed in: "post-Kellogg's cornflakes."

The other one: Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, October 2007. It had just gotten dark during the set, and a combination of all the equipment onstage and the crazy projection show they had going blew a fuse, and the set went dark. It was near the end of their set, and the band assumed they'd been pulled. The band walked off, understandably upset. After being corrected, they came back onstage, apologized, and played what Kevin Barnes claimed was an "unironic" cover of Prince's "Purple Rain".

Finally, Of Montreal are, I'm pretty sure, the only band that would ever include the words "phallocentric tyranny" in a song and mean it.

I love Of Montreal because they are unlike any other band. I am completely infatuated with everything to do with this epic band. They have opened my eyes to a whole entire new genre of music. Whenever I am going through a difficult time or feel stressed i can always count on the amazing and unique songs of this band to distract me. It is so hard to explain how much I love this band. I cannot picture my life without Of Montreal. I can truly say because of Of Montreal, I have a completely different outlook on life. They showed me it is okay to be different. of Montreal are the best band in the world for a few reasons. For a start, they're one of the few bands that have constantly evolved musically over their career, even now 10 years and as many records in they're still reinventing themselves, making the music more interesting and experimenting, trying new things out. I can't think of any bands (maybe Pulp, Animal Collective?) that were at their most ambitious and exciting that far into their career. Kevin Barnes keeps his finger on the pulse the whole time, ya know, he's got a huge range of influences, he loves Erykah Badu and Funkadelic and stuff like that but he also came out of the Elephant 6 scene, the same scene that birthed Neutral Milk Hotel and Olivia Tremor Control... whilst those bands stayed the same or burnt out completely, of Montreal kept going, kept interesting - Kevin's said the new albums gonna be heavily influenced by HEALTH and Gang Gang Dance of all people, ya know, noisy, dancey psychadelia.

As well as the music, there's obviously Kevin's lyrics... from the queer little character studies on The Gay Parade, the more complex concept records like Coquelicot: Asleep In The Poppies, all through to Hissing Fauna, which has some of the darkest lyrics for an album considered to be of the indie-pop variety .... "the sun is out, it melts the snow that bore yesterday, makes you wonder, why it bothered", and all this time he's kept a sense of humour and intelligence about the project, when John Peel described why he liked The Fall so much - famously saying "they're always the different but always the same" - that describes what me and most other of Montreal fans like the band so much, they've tried all these new songwriting methods out, especially since OMM2 finished (since 2005's The Sunlandic Twins Kevin has written and recorded all the albums by himself... previous records to this are reffered to as the OMM2 period, infact TST opens with "A Requiem for OMM2). He's putting these crazy psychadelic, dark, sex fuelled lyrics over some of the most interesting electro-glam-kraut-pop-hop-psychadelic-funk party music around at the moment.

On a purely visual level, the band have a great aesthetic about them as well, which I reckon is as important as the music. No one wants a boring pop star, that's why rubbish like Interpol will never become one of the all time great acts. From singing on stage naked to riding a horse to pretending to hang himself, like David Bowie and Grace Jones before them, of Montreal are taking the live show to it's natural conclusion, encompassing all of the art forms (Barnes even embarked on a standup comedy tour at one point along with his wife) and keeping the audience interested. For me, anyway, the way they strive to always stay interesting and never - god forbid - get boring, is why they are the greatest act on the planet.

If you haven't listened to it, get on Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? right now. It's, in my opinion, the greatest album ever recorded. It sounds musically and lyrically like a mental breakdown, which is, esentially, what it is - the album was recorded whilst Kevin was in a dark period in his relationship with his wife, and taking all kinds of anti-depressants to hide the fact. On top it has this glossy, fun, pop music, these interesting yet dancey beats, these great riffs, funky basslines ya know... which is what it's like for someone on anti-depressants, but underneath there's still the quite depressing realisation that the whole thing is purely temporary, you're not actually happy at all and you're trying to hide it with this fun outgoing person, and Kevin's lyrics, for me anyway, represent the nature of depression, the fact that he's not actually happy at all... get on it now.

The few amazing times I have had the honor to see them were beyond real. Kevin Barnes, Dotty, BP, James Husband, etc. have been making beautiful experiences for me since I was a kid. I would be honored to win this, because of Montreal have been my favorite performers for many years. I would love to have these products from the band that changed my life.

okay so I've been reading everyone post, this is going to be a hard to top all the ass kissing. but here it goes. I'm writing this so I can win for my girlfriend brandy. Brandy has loved Of Montreal fo longer than I can remember. She doesn't like to tell many people about this band because down here in Texas not many people have heard any of your music so she loves that you are her little secret. A gem. On the other hand, we live in Texas, one time you randomly came to austin and she was of course very bummed out that we couldn't make it, for her it was as though a once in a lifetime opportunity was missed. I am not going to say I love your music, and I hope that doesn't case me to lose this but I do really appreciate your talent, and over the 2 and half years I've been with this girl, I must say your music has grown on me, there is something special about it, idk if it is the actuall feelings that are conveyed through the music or if it's something else that I si

Kevin Barnes is a genius. I can't fathom how he has come up with so many unbelievable, well-rounded songs that actually mean something. of Montreal has gone through such glorious changes, and I love them for that -- the band members, album subjects, instruments used, etc. And I can listen to every album, love it, and point out different parts of it that are specific to of Montreal's brilliance. On top of that, the live shows are so developed and shocking and just really fucking awesome. My favorite story to tell people about experiences at shows involves of Montreal and Kevin Barnes wiener.
That being said, of Montreal is my favorite band EVER.

I love of Montreal because they singlehandedly justify why we still make pop music half a century after The Beatles, and how far the medium can be pushed (i.e. a hell of a lot further than rock, fucking suck on that prog rockers). And because Skeletal Lamping was such a brilliant album 75% of reviewers didn't understand it at all and wrote rambling incoherent reviews as confused-sounding and schizophrenic as the album itself, the difference being that the album ultimately stands up under scrutiny.

Because every reason I love pop music is in of Montreal, and they sound like they understand me.

4 years ago I was a freshman in high school, I had dismissed all new music as bad, and only listened to "classic rock" type songs. Then my friend told me about of Montreal. I listened to their album "Sunlandic Twins" and my faith in the music industry as a whole was restored. I am now in college as a Commercial Music Management major, and plan on working in the record industry. of Montreal were the key first step in helping me to realize what I really wanted in life. And that is why I love them.

2 years ago Sinita Khela said

I love of Montreal because they're fresh and totally the funkiest thing of my time, and that makes me proud to even be able to dance to them in my private bedroom jam sessions. I love that their records are so insane and wildly unpredictable, and totally perfect, and while they use some bad ass technology for that, which is awesome, they can still recreate at least the same amount of beauty when performing acoustically. Damn, it's so crappy I live in the UK, they hardly ever come over here, and I've never seen them perform live, which eats me every day, it really does. I also thank them so much; of Montreal have shaped me and impacted my life I am so grateful for.

2 years ago Alyssa W. said

of Montreal came into my life by chance, I was given the opportunity to transfer my cousin's radio playlists on to my computer and in the mix she had "The Sunlandic Twins" and "Satanic Panic in the Attic". I'm an "artist" and to be truthful what stood out to me most was the fantastic cover art but the book did not only live up to the cover, it blew it away.

That was my freshmen year in high school and since of Montreal has been the music playing though all of the most important moments in my life, good and bad. When my grandma died "The Past is a Grotesque Animal" was there for me more than any friends. When I met new people the first thing I'd play them was "Tim I Wish You Were Born A Girl" (not relevant to their current sound, but still incredible). The first time getting stoned "Lysergic Bliss" blew my mind. When I moved to San Francisco I was really into "So Begins Our Alabee". Oddly enough when I came out to my friends I heard the sample off of the new album which appropriately had the lyrics "Your pussy is a star".

I have yet to find any band that can touch their sound, evolve as they have, and still maintain complete originality. To say they're my favorite band would imply competition, of Montreal is the driving force of music in my intergalactic life.

2 years ago Lachlan said

I love of Montreal so much because the music is filled with such honesty, while not being straightfoward, I mean one would assume that a song about a chemical deppression couldn't be made into a bouncy pop song. But that's the amazing thing about Kevin Barnes, he has in recent years been really pushing the boundaries of what music's limits are, and the fanbase is absolutley loving it. We want to hear about the transformation from Kevin Barnes to Georgie Fruit, we want to be exposed to a song that is compiled of 7 smaller songs of no predefinition. Music is changed in Kevin Barnes, and has limitless possibilities. The music of 'of Montreal' I love so much because it is uninhibited, truthful, alternative and visionary. It's a rare thing that us and of Montreal have, and we know those not experiencing this are just missing out, on the lyrical joy and musical experience that is of Montreal. That's why I love them so.

They express all the emotions I've ever felt with a wholeheartedness and a readiness to laugh about it, jump right in, acknowledge everything. They make me feel like laughing and facing the world again. They're also truly musical- none of the four-chord pop crap, they dig straight to the beats and harmonies and lyrics that actually still contain meaning. They make things matter, and they make you dance to it.
If I had to choose one album to listen to for the rest of my life, it would honestly be Skeletal Lamping. Their music holds everything it stands for, and it also has my personal memories tacked on to the end, bringing me back to the best times I've ever had. They're my life soundtrack.

Of Montreal has halted by Gemini tactics ever since I watched the end credits for the film "Kabluey," where "Wraith Pinned to the Mist" was playing. Ever since, I have memorized all of Hissing Fauna and most of Skeletal Lamping, and can write an essay all about Georgie Fruits. Kevin's falsetto vocals and the humorously eloquent lyrics, along with the catchy melodies, are cracking my sweet love and making me a motherfucking headline (and bitch, you don't even know it). I can now do it softcore if you want, and have noticeably tense reconstruction. After listening to them over and over again, the hope of a lonely wet nightmare is not all I have to live for. Can't help it if it's true, don't wanna be a man. Because of Montreal is able to write a song that makes you realize that that song is exactly how you feel, when you didn't even know that you felt that way.
Because no one has been able to capture Scandinavian summers with quite the same melancholy restlessness that I have felt every year of my life.
Because they are this way empathetic, yet at the exact same time they allow you to experience something totally alien.
Because they allow you to experience all of this while wearing fabulous make-up and turquoise boots.

DON'T ASK ME TO EXPLAIN

How will I ever know you enough to love you
If you're hiding who you are?
Don't ask me to explain
Who are you hiding you from
Across the table with a penny in each eye?
Don't ask me to explain

I'd like to marry all of my close friends
And live in a big house together by an angry sea
Am I the devil's marbles?
Don't move on without me
Who will be watching my body when I sleep?
Who will I believe in?

How am I supposed to let it show
When I don't even know?
Don't ask me to explain
Besides, I don't want to be
The one who's coming out first
I'd really like to, but I'm just too shy
Don't ask me to explain

I'd like to marry all of my close friends
And live in a big house together by an angry sea
Am I the devil's marbles?
Don't move on without me
Who will be watching my body when I sleep?
Who will I believe in?

It's so easy to lie to myself
And pretend that I could love you
But I can't

I love of Montreal because they take genres in which people have become very rich and very famous off of very simplistic, repetitive, and stupid music and have made music that is interesting, complicated, challenges the listener, not made just to make people happy and to make money, and overall is just shear awesomeness and fun.

I love Of Montreal because it is ingrained in some of the greatest memories my friends and I have together. Of Montreal's discography (especially Skeletal Lamping) has been a requirement for any road trip we have taken, any party we have thrown, and even random moments in grocery stores when we bust out singing "For Our Elegant Caste."

I love this band and their music so much because they have encouraged me to be myself, to look on the bright side of things, and to never be ashamed of anything - or anyone - that I love. They have been incredibly inspirational when it comes to my artwork, as well.
And their concerts are by far the best that I've ever attended! Definitely some of the happiest, most amazing nights of my life.

I have never heard a band like of Montreal before, and I'm not sure I will again. They actually came to Australia and I saw them live and it was the best show I've ever seen.

There's so much of their music that I get in a way I can't really explain, but it works, and it's awesome, and it's me, and yes. Epic amounts of love.face-grin

My life is sunshine and rainbows but also has moments of shell shock and pain. I find it refreshing to listen to upbeat music the reflects on both the good and the bad. It feels good to know that you can laugh and sing through the good times and bad. Thats why I love of Montreal.

of Montreal...you are a cat in heat, and i am your aspiring suitor...

words are not enough to describe the ecstasy but here are a few: sex, exhaustion, tragedy, comedy, honesty, arrogance, guffaw, charisma, commitment, color... dada ...

better than salty honey over mango on a hot Fijian morning... better than chair sex.

I love you because i can.

The music is a given, of course (why else would I bother posting?). I'm in love with their haunting Beach-Boys-on-acid harmonies and fantastic imagery/metaphor. Aside from their always stellar music, I especially love Of Montreal (more than the bozos above me) for these reasons: the fucking ninjas (give it up for the gassing of the pigs!) and Kevin's bitchin' fashion sense! (Kev, you still haven't answered my tweet.. Who made that jacket you wore to FFF Fest?)!

Anyways, you can bet that before I die I'll be spending the Summer in Oslo too..

Before discovering of Montreal, I only listened to dead artists. You made me discover live music and I couldn't wish better than oM to make me go to concerts, given the true show we get. And also, I don't know how you manage to do that, but you keep me awake most of the night to read interviews or lyrics, watch pictures or make a photo album of the shows I've been to. I love you because you make me save my money to go see you abroad -you also make me travel- because one show a year is not enough. And simply because there's only when I talk to people that I'm able not to listen to you. I get the impression of wasting my time when oM is not playing in my earplugs.

Listening to the instrumentation and production on oM's last 3 albums is like ear candy, and the shows I've seen are just as entertaining—especially because the music sounds just as good as the records. I'm seeing you tonight in Boston! I can't wait!

At times like these I hate the fact that my english isn't as great as my portuguese! But since I hope you are reading this, I love of Montreal because its the best musical source for my daydreams and sidenotes of notebooks and humming alongs and soundtracks of being in love!
also, i love of Montreal because they introduce me to so many awesome artists, as Wong Kar Wai!
i love them, because they showed me i could ever get to love a sound more than The Beatles.
And mostly I can say that I love of Montreal because they are my favorite band ever!!
Because they are art music fashion literature bedtime stories and all the arts mixed together, at the right timing and place!

I love of Montreal so very much, because of the sheer genius of it all. From Kevin Barnes lyrical masterpeices, to the whole bands stage performance, they are everything I have looked for in a band. Intellegence, meets art, meets aweseome beats, meets theatrics. It's one of a kind, and it's so amazing to me. By far the best band I have ever had the honor of coming across. Thank you so much!

Because I thought for the last couple of days until realising I could not adequately explain my infatuation. I could try, and I could list all the reasons they're a great band, but I could not put into words the infinite appeal they have to me. The closest explanation I could come up with; Kevin Barnes is the human incarnation of Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of music, poetry, the arts, prophecy and truth.

I love of Montreal because they aren't just a band; the music and the art and the performances combine perfectly to create a whole new universe in which anything can and does happen.

And because they gave me the best night of my life when they came to New Zealand.

Of Montreal is sparkly and beautiful and so much deeper than anyone could expect.

2 years ago ugh said

Just be honest like Anibal and admit your false sense of entitlement. >:) But PLEASE drop the whole new universe, "deep" references. They don't take themselves that seriously. (Which is a good bit of advice for artists everywhere.) The show was awesome!

I love Of Montreal so much that I seriously almost died in the chaos of the Crystal Castles performance at Lolla 09 JUST to get front row. It was raining that day and I got tangled in my poncho and had to rip it off while getting trampled by 2,000 ravers. LEGIT. Of Montreal is more then music. I get so giddy everytime I listen. Which would be daily since I was in the 7th grade.......I'm a OM geek.

I saw of Montreal in Chattanooga, TN a few years ago. You guys know a good friend of mine, John Stone. Can't wait to get you back here. I'm down with of Montreal because it says "sup, fear?", takes it by the hand; hangs out with it; makes out with it and then slaps it in the face, only to remain good friends. "The secret of life is to have no fear. It's the only way to function." - Stokely Carmichael
I think you guys are living it and I enjoy your music because of it.
