Brightest Young Things

The NYT used to run front page articles about the  "overt homosexuality" plaguing public spaces and proper society. And while today, you'll see evidence of the lingering opposition to homosexuality in quotes from suburban Sacramento middle-managers/youth ministers, the rest of our media and pop culture is inundated with positive gay images, personalities, and content.

It's been 40 years since Stonewall, that means we have 4 decades of queer history, culture, and icons to celebrate. Luckily we are teaming up with Capitol Pride Fest to help you celebrate the hell out of Bea, Liza, Madonna, Cher, Britney, and Adam Lambert.

What: Pride After Dark at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Gardens

When: Saturday, June 13, 2009 from 9 PM  to 2 AM

Music: DJ Darryl Strickland, DJ Michael Adolphson  (SHIFT) and DJ Will Eastman (Blisspop).

We have two pairs of tickets to giveaway!!!!!!!!

To win: tell us who favorite gay icon is and why.

See the Capital Pride Website for festival details

I was actually thinking about this today. My Favorite gay icon is a bit unconventional. Her name is Octavia St. Luarent. She become a Legend in the Ballroom vogueing scene, but most people know her from her participation in the documentary. "Paris is Burning". My favorite quote from her is: "I want to be somebody...no... I am somebody I just want to be a rich somebody". She passed away earlier this year but she means a lot to many people, especially queer youth during a time where nobody gave a fuck about gay people. I wish she would still around to see all the progress that we are making today.

after wracking my brain long and hard (you better BELIEVE that pun was intended) i've decided to go with liza minelli, not only for being 50% judy garland but also for having a hand in two of the greatest things to have ever existed: cabaret and arrested development.

My favorite gay icon has to be Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O' Hara in Gone With The Wind. Fiddle-dee-dee, she had tenacity.. quite possibly the biggest bitch of all time. She had a fabulous gown made of velvet curtains when she was at her poorest... "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!" She was certainly a tower of strength and did not like being defied. OK and sure she was a tad annoying, was married 3 times, and went after a married man in between, but at least she kept it real. Gotta love her, Gay Icon.

I think this post fails to express that pride isn't just about gay men (love you guys). What about the LBT icons? As a dyke, I'll admit that some (a lot?) of lesbian icons aren't glamorous (Billie Jean King? Ani? KD?), but come on ... I expected to at least see a crappy Linsay Lohan joke mentioned.

I guess my favorite gay icon is Tina Fey because Google tells me she's a lesbian icon, and I think 30 Rock is funny.

david sedaris. witty, intelligent, brutally honest, quirky, self-depreciating, and outrageously funny. bestselling author of 7 books and radio personality. he splits his time between paris and new york with his longtime partner Hugh. doesn't get more fabulous than that.
can i make this a brother-sister combo?
amy sedaris. witty, ditto...ditto...ditto, and outrageously funny. has been in everything from "sex and the city" (a gay icon must) to her own show "strangers with candy" as jerri blank. she usually plays the ugly duckling but out of character she is drop dead.
these two are great, real-life gay icons

oscar wilde is the ultimate gay icon...just look at his grave stone in pere lachaise cemetery in paris...its COVERED with lipstick kisses. famous for his biting wit and penchant for absinthe, he wrote some of the classic plays and novels of his time. he was also persecuted for being gay.
while on his death bed in a grungy hotel, legend has it that his last words were: "Either this wallpaper goes, or I go."

don't know if you've already picked a winner, but even if you have, i'm still thrilled to have an opportunity to talk about Beyoncé. i mean come on... she is sasha fierce. she wears titanium hand jewelry. she wrote a song about jay-z's big, er, ego. oh, and she'll beat a crazy white bitch while wearing high heeled boots (see
