DIY: Cuddly Friend

DIY: Cuddly Friend

September 17, 2008 by Stephanie Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

Make your very own (emo)nster plush toy - a very cuddly friend!

Materials:

  • Felt (available at Michael’s for about $.25 a piece) - note that you’ll need two sheets of felt to cover the front and back of the monster’s body, plus however many other pieces of felt to add details like eyes, tummies, mohawks, black emo roses, and broken hearts.
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Scissors
  • Paper (the same size as one square of felt) and pencil
  • Cotton filler (available at any craft store)
  • Imagination!

1.  Imagine up the most adorable monster ever.  It can have tentacles or horns or just be one big blob.  The sky is the limit!

2.  On your sheet of paper, draw what you imagine.  The outline of the monster’s body in your drawing will be the “pattern” for your actual monster.

3.  Once your sketch is complete, carefully cut along the silhouette of your monster.

4.  Take the two pieces of felt that you’d like to use as the front and back of your monster’s body and lay one on top of the other.  Then take the paper pattern you just cut out and lay it on top of the felt.  Cut the felt along the lines of the paper pattern.

5.  Cut eyes, mohawks, hearts - whatever you want - out of the other pieces of felt and arrange them as you like on one of the pieces of felt that you just cut for the monster’s body (this will be the front).

6.  Hand stitch each piece onto the felt.

6. Once the face is complete, lay the backside of the monster directly on TOP of the face you just sewed, such that the corresponding pieces match up.  (The face of your monster should be in between the body pieces).  Stitch around the perimeter of the monster, leaving a small unstitched “hole” at the top (like you just made a monster pita pocket).

7.  Once sewn, turn the monster right-side in, pushing the parts through the unsewn “hole.”  Get excited to cuddle!

8.  Stuff the hole with filler.

9.  Whip-stitch the hole closed.  Voila!  You have a brand new cuddly friend.

Diesel Style Lab winged heels from May ‘04
my greatest fashion regret: not buying them
don’t have to make the whole shoe obviously
but how about the side-wing add on’s?

I think you should make one in the shape of a hairy bagpipe monster.
