As last year’s runner-up on American Idol – losing out to Taylor (Whoa!) Hicks no less – Katharine McPhee would be served to find a musical vehicle where she isn’t overshadowed by another star. Instead, McPhee will be co-headlining the “Club 44 Make History! Tour” with Hillary Clinton this summer. Clinton, long-overshadowed by her own gray-haired Southerner, is kicking off the national tour Wednesday night in the parking lot of the old convention center adjacent to Chinatown.
The block party, as its being billed, is a fundraising and media gimmick. However, it is a relatively cheap way to see a few famous people and be surrounded by really excited women.
Also appearing are Babyface (who will join McPhee in entertaining the crowd), Oprah-favorite Maya Angelou, Madeleine Albright, Geraldine Ferraro and Billy Jean King.
Tickets are $20 (free for those under 18) and available at the gate on Wednesday. However, the campaign is strongly encouraging e-ticket purchases on its website. Unlike most online concert tickets, there is no surcharge. However, only American citizens are allowed to donate to presidential campaigns. So, hosers take off, eh.
Personally, Brightest Young Things is holding out for a free concert by perennial Kucinich supporter Willie Nelson.
