The Heist of Thunder–But Whose?

The Heist of Thunder–But Whose?

DJs take solace. There is a generation of young bucks that are fresh out of high school and they are just DYING to come to your parties, as soon as humanly-fucking-possible.

Monday the 22nd, at the Black Cat, with Sharpied-X’s abounding, these gloriously fresh and queer party-monsterlings have done enough scoping of BYT and are ready for their own time in the neon lights. It’s kind of exciting. They showed up on a Monday night to give Will Eastman some genuine L-U-V, even though they were jerkin’ it to the dance floor hits of BUZZ that soundtracked my own ill-advised younger days.

Mr. Eastman is a very technical DJ, did you know? His own slang of transitions is O.G but also wiley and technologically keen. I was actually more impressed with his DJing than I was with Thunderheist.

That is not to say there is an absence of talent in their outfit, it’s only top heavy and awkward. MC Isis is the kind of front-and-center energizer that should only be surrounded by two kinds of people: the incredibly gifted virtuoso, or the incredibly stupid Adonis. She should go solo at this point, and get some better producers. Or she should just perform to a backing track at big parties.

Instead, stage right is the guy who owns a lot of synths that he can’t quite figure out, and behind her is the guy who can play drums ok. Neither are terribly interesting to look at, nor contribute very much to the performance. This Grahm Zilla character kind of plods along with these arpeggios of four chords while the other guy just rides that hi-hat and misses a beat every now and then.
TH16 TH21 TH16 TH17

Also, I read their wikipedia and there is this pretty cock-and-bull story about them meeting online and starting a band online, which sounds like the fabrications of some focus-grouping stooge who works for the i-pod sector of MACWORLD. How did your song get in that movie The Wrestler, guys? I still don’t have the emotional bandwidth to see it, so I’ll just assume it was during the part where Marissa Tomei is a stripper.

KIDDIES BEWARE OF THE BULLSHIT. Watch the Matrix or something. There is a world of misrepresentation out there, and it’s all about getting your parents money through you.

Go to more parties and if it’s famous, it’s probably over.

Seacrest OUT.

Can we pay some respect to TT the Artist and her amazing opening set with Eastman? or maybe Mr. Reviewer was too distracted by the tweens.

Hater of haters Says:

Ahahaha! Wow questioning how a band came together is just a way for a lazy and not so talented writter to fill his word quota.
I guess you would like rye rye better , things always sound fuller when you are rapping over your actual tracks.

Maybe if you were a bit more bitter you might be able to write for pitchfork.

With your next review please include an original song produced and preformed by you, it’s east to hate on artist when you are not musical talented yourself

HIGh 5!

Isis Says:

T t the artist is a talented young lady and I look forward to hearing more from her.

And sorry to burst your bubble but me and grahm did actually meet online 2.5 years ago.

Thanks for coming out guys

AutoRock Says:

For real! TT and Helix Queen (in the article’s thumbnail pic) killed it on vocals when Will played out his original stuff at the end of his great set.

And WTF is this about:
“Go to more parties and if it’s famous, it’s probably over.” This sentence made me want to punch a baby. Get over yourself dude.

While I wasn’t blown away by Thunderheist, Isis is a great front woman with a ton of charisma.

Stone Says:

This reviewer is an idiot.

Not only was this review tasteless and direspectful to the artists and the fans, but its clear that the dude has no clue or idea how to write about music.

I was at that show, and it was one of best and most energetic show I’ve seen in DC this year. A definite sleeper. Please don’t let this dumbass review discourage you from seeing a Thunderheist show in the future.

I’m disappointed by this review.

The show was great, as was the crowd.

Not gonna lie…I’m sort of embarrassed to have my photos in this review.

It was a great show, I thought.

Thunderheist rocked, as did TT, Helix, and Will – I was surprised that the crowd was ready to move on a Monday night. who cares if they’re under 21, kids DANCED

Will Says:

Think you’re being way too harsh on the Thunderheist dudes, Andrew, but it’s your review… I was really feelin their stuff.

Thanks for the kind words errrone, and for coming out on a Monday! Big ups to T.T. the Arti$t and Helix Queen for live rockin our new tracks. The sequence of photos is kinda weird, so to clarify, for those who missed it, T.T. is in the hat and Helix has the rad hairdo, also in the thumbnail. We’re playing again July 3 at DC Summer Extravaganza, 9:30 Club.

Allow me to take this opportunity to reiterate: people, if you like dance music, write well, and are informed, PLEASE hit up BYT and write some show reviews. Please. This is nothing personal toward you, Andrew, or anyone else, but aimed at the broader scope of dance event coverage in DC. Peace.

hi all

yipes! was at the pool so i didnt know there was something happening here.

i did want to clarify that i dont see anything lame about the young bucks being into the music or them going out. i just thought it was noteworthy and kinda cool.

and i do think it important to kind of recant for being a little bit mean. its not really my m.o to be a spoil sport.

but i was assigned to “review” the show, so i gave my opinion for whatever if was worth and i guess that frame of expression is built by criticisms.

i do stand by what i said though.

thanks for reading.

really, yours,
andrew

I was pleasantly surprised by Will Eastman, definitely going to go see him on July 3rd!

As for TH, Isis was great, she kept the crowd entertained and on their toes. To get a dance party like that going on a Monday night is pretty rare, so big ups to them.

When I first walked in, I was a bit iffy about all the younger kids, almost felt like I was back in high school when I saw them, but they helped make the show what is was. Those kiddies danced like little freaks, with absolutely no inhibitions. As much as it may pain me to say this, they made me feel like dancing.

Also, TT was siiiiiiick! Hope to hear more from her.

Great photos, anyone know where I could see more from that night?

Thanks

Honest review, from Bucket’s perspective. Read his other stuff before you negate his writing abilities.

@ Hater of Haters “With your next review please include an original song produced and preformed by you, it’s *east* to hate on *artist* when you are not musical talented yourself” — Spell check is your friend, and he might just take you up on that.

“but i was assigned to “review” the show, so i gave my opinion for whatever if was worth and i guess that frame of expression is built by criticisms.”

Keep at it. As a sometime reviewer who calls it like I see it, I get the same kind of comments from fans as though people expect you to fawn over things they like, even if you weren’t impressed.

missingtoof Says:

Two years ago I saw Isis grab a toy mic and speaker set, jump on some fools couch and bust out a little diddy called “sweet 16″ if i’m not mistaken.

Point being, if you’re cool enough to rap on a a playskool karaoke machine, politely remove yourself from the fuckery that exists in DC.

And for future reference any bands that are coming from NYC and need a tour stop in between, just do another show in NYC and then drive all day to Atlanta, because every place in between is relative shite.

Will Says:

Hey Missingtoof, as people pointed out the Thunderheist show was a lot of fun. Don’t talk about my city that way. I’m tempted to hurl some expletives but seeing as you just dismissed Baltimore, Philly, DC, Richmond, and the entire east coast, your comment is too ignorant to merit it.
