Brightest Young Things

This show was sold out, and by the time I got there the only opener was done – I missed them – and the line was down to Muleh. It was cold and I didn't know if I was going to be able to get in – lists are always getting messed up. Luckily I did, and using my show manners (lack of all manners) I pushed my way up to the front.
I can't believe she just pushed past us, I want to punch her in the face. Where does she get off thinking she can go up front, we were here first, blahblahblah… I hate people like that, so I graciously turned around and inquired as to whether they had ever been to a show, "yes." Really? Because if you have then you're aware that this is general admission and anyone can push up front. "Well we were here first," at this point I think I stared blankly at these chicks and again reminded them that it was general admission and I could do what I wanted.

This sort of thing would usually keep me steamed for the rest of the evening, but that night I couldn't stay upset. The Raveonettes may not be the most energetic group on stage, but their Danish dance-pop is just so irresistible; it had the majority of the room dancing, of course those could have been all the kids here from out of town that aren't aware that DC doesn't dance, but there was dancing nonetheless.
The duo, Sharin Foo and Sune Rose Wagner, were accompanied by a bassist and a new drummer. The drummer only played a tom and a snare. Throughout their set they remain mostly stoic, occasionally looking at each other and smirking. It was as though they were keeping a secret from the rest of us, one that the audience was eager to know.
Their set was as usual on the shorter side, just over an hour, but they filled it with fast jams leaving out the fan favorite 'I want the Candy' – much to my disappointment. They incorporated the majority of their album LustLustLust and new songs from their late EP, Beauty Dies. For their encore they closed with their single 'Aly Walk with Me'. Fast and true to their reputation they came, we saw, and they left. Brief and beautiful.

How is it everyone else's problem that you got there late? Therefore, they should therefore let you in front on them?

And there's nothing "gracious" about asking someone if they'd "been to a show before" after you pushed past like you being in front is somehow more important than anyone else being in front. Most people would call it "a dick move".

I'll try this "general admission" logic out next time I'm at the bank or something.

Hint: Next time you arrive late to a show maybe wear a fedora with a little post it that says "PRESS" on the side. Just keep pointing to it and the seas will part.

Amanda, you do sound sort of bitchy in the opening paragraph. What makes you think you (or your attitude) were any better than the kids who were already up front? Seriously...

3 years ago Amanda said

you both sound like people that would be upset when someone got in front of them at a show, but wouldn't make the effort to get up closer themselves. you probably think tall people should stay in the back, too. if this makes me a bitch/dick, fine.

it does. you sound like both a bitch and a dork. your job was to review the show. you showed up late and missed the opening band?! if this was your real job you would be fired. you suck at reviewing concerts. not to mention you sound like ever real music fan's worst concert nightmare. kudos to chris on the pics though, well done.

Concert rules:

1) If you're going to a show to talk and not watch the show, stay at the back near the bar
2) Don't wear the t-shirt of the band you're seeing
3) Don't sing along louder than the actual singer unless they ask everyone to sing, people are there to hear them, not you
4) If it's crowded, don't dance like a jack ass
5) If it's not crowded, don't get mad at people for dancing like jack asses
6) Don't continue to yell out requests if it's obvious the band isn't taking them
7) Don't continue to yell out an obscure b-side request to prove that you are a super fan
8) Don't hit on my girlfriend
9) If you are super tall and there is a short little kid behind you, let them stand in front of you
10) When there is plenty of standing room, don't touch me. It's very simple, just don't touch me. When you think you're about to touch me, stop.
11) Don't be "that guy"
12) If you got there late, you can push your way up to the middle, but not any further. You can then move up as people leave. The people that got there before you specifically got there before you so they could be closer. If you wanted to be closer, you should have gotten there earlier. Your problem, not theirs.

so i'm a bitch, big deal. when i talked to other people that night about what happened they agreed with me, so i'm not alone in my opinion - not that i should have to defend it anyway.

if people are so upset by my review (and i admit it is shitty compared to some other things i've written, and i didn't put as much effort into it as i would have had my schedule not been so crazy this past week) before complaining, maybe you could point out what you liked about the show that i left out, or what you didn't like, or how you feel about how the band has progressed or not in the past year. everyone should really check out their new ep.

i hate it when people don't post using their real names.

i'll admit this review is fairly shitty compared to other things that i've written (mostly due to this past week being the most insane week ever) but could we discuss the show? if you don't like the review then call me out for what i left out, discuss what you liked and what you didn't like. their new ep is great and i had a good time at the show and there was dancing.

Amanda, based on your account, you are indeed a bitch/dick, so it's good you're "fine" with that. "Have you been to a show before?" I can only imagine how that sounded.

ANYWAY, regarding this show. It was super. I've been a bit hater about the soundsystem at the Black Cat and I don't know what the deal was, but for this show the sound was MUCH better. Still have to remember my sling shot next time to take out those annoying lights about 30 feet from the stage...

Thanks for the tickets BYT!

"it had the majority of the room dancing"... were you actually at the show? no one was even moving it was like being at a funeral. it was so bad we left the front that you pushed your way up to and moved to the back so we could dance on our own. the raveonettes were good though and it was a fun evening... but dont give DC credit where its not due. also... on amanda's concert manners if she was actually dancing she deserves to be allowed to move to the front.

i was dancing. and the people around me were dancing. and when i got on my tip toes to look around the room i thought i saw dancing. of course those may have just been heads bobbing in boredom? i'm glad you were dancing.

at one point there was a guy in front of me that was very focused on his air guitar. he almost hit me and the person next to me several times. when he noticed a small radius forming around him he turned to us and got us doing it too.

i wasn't sure how to incorporate that into the review, but it was fun.

my favorite member of the crowd was a guy trying to sell me an obama karate headband for 10 bucks... he even let me try it on. I hope when cut copy comes in march or the presets come in april that the dancing consists of more than head bobbing =) On a side note Cale's rule about tall people is absolute crap. if that is the rule the crowd would have to be assigned standing positions based on height. its like the woman behind me and my friends at the inauguration complaining about not being able to see, none of us could see and if you were there to watch the tv screen you should have stayed at home. but fear not Cale I promise not to hit on your girlfriend, but I might block her view... sorry
