PIXIES played the first show of their 2 date DC jaunt yesterday at DAR. (yesterday was sold out, today isn't). Jay Reatard opened. We thought we had a writer and a photo pass but that turned out to be just a photo pass after all so there are no words but you can read this instead and leave comments with your impressions aplenty.

A few thoughts:
-I missed Jay Reatard completely. Shows that start on time are a foreign concept to me.
-Caught all of Pixies, however.
-Starting with Manta Ray was a bizarre choice, but I kind of admire it.
-DAR was a terrible venue for this show. The sound was mediocre at best, the seats were a nuisance, and people in some of the higher-up seats sat through the whole show, to which I reply: what the hell, seriously?
-Joey Santiago was either sick, on something, or just incredibly, incredibly sloppy. Dude made a LOT of mistakes, probably more than I'd make playing these songs, and I didn't help write them.
-Highlights for me were "Gouge Away", "Silver", "Hey", and "Nimrod's Son".
-The whole leaving the house lights on during the second encore thing, I could have done without.
-Frank Black/Black Francis/whatever he's calling himself now basically didn't say a word to the crowd the entire night; Kim Deal did 99% of the talking. She seemed to be having the most fun of anybody. Frank/Francis was in good form too, though.
Overall, a good show, but probably would not pay 60 bucks to see them again.
I wasn't enamored with the sound at DAR for them on the last pass (although TV on the Radio sounded insanely good that night - hmmm...) so I couldn't take the plunge again. Having said that, I have the same shirt as Mr. Black and it looks strangely terrible on me as well.
Jay Reatard was really impressive even if they seemed a little out of place there (openers almost always do in anything other than club shows).
Pixies were in great form as usual. Frank Black Cougar Francis or whatever he wants to be called these days still makes one of the best screams in the biz. While it was great to hear Doolittle in it's entirety, their decision to do that necessitated leaving out a lot of awesome songs from other records, and took out a little bit of the fun of the 'what will they play next' game.
Some of the Doolittle related B-sides they played were evidently B-sides for good reason the exceptions being "Manta Ray", and "Into the White".
When the finally decided to stray from Doolittle material in the second encore, the first two songs we unfortunately predictable and not terribly compelling ('where is my mind' and 'gigantic'). After putting down their instruments and appearing to be ready to exit the stage for a final time Joey Santiago gave the universal 'one more' sign and then tore through an awesome 'Nimrod's Son' to save the day.
I managed to skip Jay Reatard's set despite Michael's attempt to sabotage me yesterday, TYVM.
Good show, but I'm old and bitter and miss my couch when I'm not lazing about on it.
i was at this and really enjoyed it, especially frank black's tits jiggling around in that t shirt. if he had hair, i'd have trouble telling him and kim deal apart.
i also was happy that i only saw a handful of irony mustache turds. it was mostly old dorky D&D looking people.
From what I've heard I'm actually sorry I missed it, even though I thought having fun at DAR was impossible.

Also, I had Frank Black's wrasslin' card as a child.
holy shit, that dude looks just like frank black. then again, most obese people look alike to me.
Great pictures. Here's our review:

like an old married couple, at some point all the members of the pixies will look the same.
