Amanda Lepore returned to BeBar on Saturday to encore her performance from last month. Seldom seen outside of New York City, the tranny fashion model and party icon twirled onto stage for a midnight performance that had the previously calm crowd jumping.
Performing live is a new avenue for Lepore, who is best known as a model and fixture on the New York entertainment scene. Her background, along with her age, remains a mysterious back story (her age is pegged as anywhere between 35 and 65 years old). Lepore’s shift from street fashion icon to model came with campaigns for MAC cosmetics, Armani and Heatherette with her face even featured on a limited edition Swatch watch designed by David LaChappelle.
In 2006, Lepore’s voice began appearing on hip hop tracks which ultimately led to her recording her own singles - four of which she performed at BeBar (including her tracks Champagne and My Hair Looks Fierce). Emerging onto the BeBar stage in a laser-lit mist cloud, Amanda Lepore chopped her way through the air in a mock robot dance. After an energetic set, which saw Lepore twirling and kicking through four songs, a subdued Lepore remained at BeBar to quietly greet the audience, pose for pictures and gently chat with anyone who sought her out.
This summer, Lepore will begin shooting the independent film “Shifting the Canvass” with John Paul Pitoc (”Trick”). And come Fashion Week, Amanda Lepore’s face can again be expected to canvass the tents and billboards of New York’s top designers.
this is why it is totally crucial to devote your time to studying up before the weekend hits:

May 27, 2008 at 2:43 pmso sad to have missed this
she reigned at Oberlin’s drag ball last year i heard
guess i’ll have to catch her partying up with my peeps in Philly/NYC, she has a crush on one of them and loves to kiss him all the time
good taste of course, he was my first kiss when i was 11
May 27, 2008 at 3:32 pmI should have written this up in the post: Fitsum and I shared a cab to the Black Cat afterwards. A block from BeBar, the truck driving in front of our cab stopped and the driver got out to walk back and ask our cabbie “Hey, where the girls at? You know, the working girls?” He didn’t know.
May 27, 2008 at 3:45 pmThe only way this party could have been more entertaining would be if Cazwell made a cameo as well…. Maybe the double encore will feature the NY party duo!
And John, I can’t believe that cabbie didn’t know where the working girls were. You shoulda spit on that cab!
May 28, 2008 at 12:31 pmHey John-
I’ll be playing at BeBar again on June 7th. No Amanda that time, but always appreciate the write ups!
