Well, it’s official, as of Monday evening I have had my first legitimate alcoholic beverage at the Black Cat. Sure, I may have had a sip of alcohol in a back alley before a show once or twice, but it truly doesn’t compare to the joy of paying inordinate sums of money for the privilege of socially acceptable drinking. But, my experience wasn’t the only first of Monday night, not by a long shot. On top of my landmark evening, it was also the first official show put on by The State Department. While Ms. Clinton was unable to make her promised appearance, I am pleased to announce that the show was rather spectacular.

The State Department played a short set, most likely due to diplomatic responsibilities elsewhere in the globe, but the brevity of their performance should not insinuate any lacking aspect of the show. They were great, especially their startlingly original cover of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for the Man”. I can only hope that it was a powerful start to an illustrious musical career.

After the State Department finished up their act, the Last Tide came on to play and promote the release of their EP. I was lucky enough to get a copy, and was thoroughly impressed with their performance. The headliner of the evening was Ringo Deathstarr, quite possibly one of the best band names that I have ever heard in my life. I was not familiar with their music before last night, but that didn’t impede my enjoyment of their performance in the slightest. Overall, the show was extremely well rounded, and all three bands complemented each other very well. Other than a frisky encounter with a steroidal employee in the back alley of the Black Cat, it was a thoroughly successfully evening.
