NY’s Mathematicians once again played a show worthy of headlining a Sat night at 9:30 Club. Yet they were in the living room of the 90’s punk rock staple Kansas House, 50% of which was filled with their gear. The other half was packed solid with a writhing sweaty mess of bodies, furiously freaking the fuck out. Their “gimmick” works; nerd costumes, rapping about math, etc., because the underlying songwriting is so solid. I cannot recommend seeing this band live enough. In fact, I can’t think of any other band you should make the effort to see more next time they’re in town, regardless of if it’s in somebodys living room, or DAR Constitution Hall.
DC locals (and impossible to google) Buildings and our own Edie Sedgwick opened (complete with backup singers and videos), both playing excellent sets as well, but due to some transpo issues, Miss Lexie only caught the end. Enjoy the beautiful 1’s and 0’s.

November 10, 2008 at 12:01 pmSo I realize I’m probably about to sound really lame, but what’s a good way to find out about house shows coming up around here?Kansas House and The Girl Cave and that stuff… Their myspaces haven’t been all that helpful.
New to the area. Help me get over leaving Philly.
November 10, 2008 at 1:50 pmfor one, this show was on our event calendar.
not all are, but we try.
Make freinds with Colin Crowe and Ryan Wakeman, between the two of them you’ll probably find out about almost everything you never wanted to know about house shows or alternative venues…
November 10, 2008 at 5:15 pmRyan Wakeman will also teach you everything you never wanted to know about Eddie Vedder. Run.
November 10, 2008 at 5:22 pm@Brendan: HA! Asking about house shows is the exact OPPOSITE of lame. It makes you “wicked underground.” At any rate, it is hard to find good information these days. You could always check pheer.com, but they seem to be a bit behind these days. I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but there has been a group putting out show list fliers lately. I assume you’ll just have to be on the look out for them at places like the Cat. The houses you should be looking for are: Bervin, The Corpse Fortess, and, as you already know, the Girl Cave. Typically if you end up at a show at one of these places you will be plied with plenty of fliers for other shows. And if you are really at a loss, just google any of these houses and “DC”, and typically something will show up (Just be sure to check the dates on the info you find!)
I suppose you could also space it up:

http://www.myspace.com/bervinmervin (But Bervin isn’t updated anymore……)
Good luck!

November 10, 2008 at 6:08 pmThanks all. Yeah Pheer.com seems okay, but a little slow.
And oh yes, you have no idea how “wicked underground” I am.
November 10, 2008 at 6:19 pmI want to go back in time and get Mathematicians to play my bar mitzvah.
