Live DC: Yeasayer/MGMT @ The Cat

Live DC: Yeasayer/MGMT @ The Cat

Maybe you all heard. MGMT and Yeasayer played the Black Cat on Wednesday. They played in this little room in the back of the Black Cat reputed to have bad sound and it was a singular little night that became bigger somehow. A singular little Wednesday that completely exceeded my foolishly high expectations.

This pairing is brilliant. This pairing owns its hype. This was the first show of a split bill and I want someone to follow them and document it, with a video camera or maybe a really good dicta-phone. I know there is this girl who takes Polaroids, maybe they could take her along. People will want to know about this later, people will ask and be shocked and sad at this bill having come and gone. Bills like this are hard to come by, and usually go up in flames. Maybe you think this one will. Maybe, I mean, maybe you can say who cares–two new acts who happen to be doing well–no one will care down the road, or next week. And then I would call bullshit; you would be wrong if you said those things. There is no reason for either of these bands to be a flash-in-the-pan. They showed themselves to be seriously talented, wholly impressive, and ready to work on the road.

I was elated, impressed, inspired. I wasn’t filled up or taken in. I was just really very happy. I won’t say much. I forgot my notes. See these bands.

I will say that I came away feeling very differently about both bands. MGMT drew off an early Bowie sound in their own harmonized way. The vocals are striking and their stage show was mature- few if any glances to each other- a practiced performance with perfect coordination and not a shred of the nervousness you might have sensed on Letterman. Their sound exceeded that of their album and this stage presence was collected and strong.

006.jpg 004.jpg 003.jpg 005.jpg 001.jpg

The drummer was loud and tom heavy, and he should have been. His fills were consistent and helpful, just like the seamless coordination between the two guitarists and pitch perfect harmonies. Their partnered guitars and developed electric sound was treble and thickness at once, so sparkling and loud. Simply, I was just so happy they were doing this. I had been looking for this and didn’t even know it. Their sound seemed advanced, however young they are. They have ideas, no one else is having these ideas right now, and MGMT is implementing these ideas with grace and strength. After opening with a fully captivating 9-minute opus that grew into The Handshake (if I remember correct- let me know if I am wrong) before they rolled out their single and it had the expected effect. Lots of lucky kids started to move and smile at their friends- MGMT carried this high point and lifted it higher throughout the rest of their set. Before song three some asshole yelled “make these pussies dance”, while pointing to a cadre of women in front him. MGMT responds: “we don’t know how to do that”, then played a fucking superlative set and I was sorry that ogre got in to the show and not one of you.

One day I’ll write them an email and ask them to play their entire rep., interspersed with T-Rex covers at a private party I throw on a yacht. I like this band.

Yeasayer also gets me really fucking excited about music and life. They own and earn their buzz. More rootsy than I expected, this was like the jam band I always wanted to hear

No wanking for lack of ideas, these guys couldn’t fit a more varied sound in each song. Impassioned vocals, a sharply implemented drum machine and plenty of traipsing, jungley, mystical forceful songs that pushed at the audience. I think it was making everyone daydream. At least that is what it did to me. Made me think about swimming holes in the woods and jumping out trees. Maybe that was just me. Probably.

_K5X8557.jpg _K5X8556.jpg _K5X8552.jpg _K5X8551.jpg

I loved the shouts, the images of the songs, the tribal drumming and the tinny guitar picks, the energy level. They took a roots sound and twisted it up, and it came out strong. The sound in the backstage was really quite good and they were great in that space. Driven, jumping playing to the skies really. Their wandering thumping jungle sound is an exciting appearance in the landscape of new bands. Also, I loved talking to Anand’s father about how much happier his son is doing this than pursuing law. Really a nice man.

I am sorry more folks couldn’t see the show. I will say, if you are adventurous and this shit is important to you, its worth a bus ride if in Feb. for their Philly or NY dates. Partner the trip with something else, make an excuse. This is a show that will stick in my head.

let me be the first one to comment.
this show was so good I can still barely think about it.

In fact, everyone should be glad I was not the one to write it up since my text message log shows me sending this to Cale as a description of the experience:

“i feel like I am losing my virginity all over again here. In the best way that can be interpreted”

Man.

Couldn’t be more bummed that I missed that show. Def going to the April show when they come back, but I’m seriously contemplating the need for a road trip to philly or nyc.

MGMT have that one good song and the rest of the cd is mediocre at best. yeasayer just sucks. you people have bad taste in just about everything.

As good as Yeasayer are, I couldn’t believe the hype surrounding this show. Did people want to go because they like the band OR because of super-ridiculous-blogosphere-hype from Brooklyn Vegan?

January 18, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Cale Says:

I think it was still residual hype from my gushing back in October :-)

I would actually venture to say that this show exceeded whatever expectations any hype could have built up.
It was pretty flawless.
And I’ve never heard anyone sound that good backstage. Ever.

maybe next time they play a show, we can all bring pillows and sit around, and hum along. and afterwards we will all have a good cry. this is what music is about, feeling sad for ourselves and knowing that there are other wusses out there just like us.

-but sorry if me and my friends were to hyped, we were hyping ourselves for weeks and this show was kind of a big release for us. We didn’t realize that there were so many kids around.

i have no doubt this show was f***ing fantastic. seriously. i’m happy for everyone who got to see it…and recommend bringing your sweetheart (or not) to their v-day show here in nyc.

anyway…

the real point of my comment is to say something similar to this has happened once before (as far as i know…). it was the night that TV on the Radio played their first dc show. also at the black cat. also backstage. march of 2004.

the backstage sold out. the room was beyond packed. the show ROCKED more than anything i have ever seen (to that date at least). the guys were amazing. the sound was good enough…well, it certainly didn’t detract from the overall experience by any stretch of the imagination. and there really was something to be said for seeing them in such an intimate space. awesome. *that* certainly won’t happen again.

now, the reason they didn’t move upstairs (other than the fact that no one expected that kind of a turnout) was because stellastar was playing on the main stage. with the killers opening for them (clearly, no one knew who the killers were yet). about 75 people paid up there with 200+ downstairs.

something about that was extremely gratifying. being the tvotr fan that i am…

i will say we did catch the killers set (by that time there were maybe 30 people upstairs) because william had been the first guy in dc to play them at a dj gig (of course) and got on the list. so, we checked it out. something kind of gratifying about seeing them in that context too. also something that would never happen again.

good times!

it did actually sound really good (i was expecting it to sound bad since everyone says how horrible it always sounds). i liked yeasayer more than mgmt, but both were good. the problem back there is that it feels like you are in a bag filled with hot breath and there is barely room to hold a drink between you and the next hot breath contributor. not to be negative, but a ceiling vent would be nice.

Michael Says:

The sound in the backstage sucks only when the bands don’t listen to the sound guy and insist on turning up their amps and such to the point it all just bounces around on the concrete walls.

Louder is not always better.

Thank you so much for the review and photos of the latest bright young thing.

Going to texas this weekend and I’m gonna catch the show on Sunday in Houston.

Lexie, work that polaroid!! I must confess, its a great trend you’ve started.

ps. i hate the black cat.

um… those photos are awesome. even with the lousy lighting at the cat backstage you killed it. way to go!

sofia Says:

eh. i like both yeasayer and mgmt but the hype was definitely rediculous. on the way to the black cat FOUR people asked me if i had extra tickets.

definitely not the best show i’ve been to all winter. the audience was a mix of irritating enthusiasm (”MAKE THESE PUSSIES DANCE!!!”) and complacent bores. i’ll see them in chicago and it’ll be 100% better.

(only reason i went anyway was i got a free girltalk ticket out of it)

also, i’ve never seen so many photographers at a backstage show.

January 18, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Leeza Says:

MGMT and yeasayer both killed it.

but i feel as though the group of people towards the front that were semi-heckling (”you disappoint me” being one standout comment) started yeasayer’s set off on a bad note. it was less of the religious experience that it could have been. that said, i was still practically speaking in tongues by the end.

Yay MGMT - they are blowing up so fast even the Wall Street Journal chimed in about them in today’s edition. And you know if the Wall Street Journal likes a band, they are destined for hipster greatness. Lame.

this is the best concert review i have ever read. the polaroids are also dope. i saw mgmt at music hall in bk and this is how i felt.

Yeah thats so lame when virtue is rewarded by fame and fortune. It just bums me out to think of all the great artists throughout history who’ve never been recognized for their work and died penniless or fucked themselves up til they were worthless. Why can’t everyone be that lucky!?!?

Nah. MGMT is the shit and it’s awesome that they are gonna be popular until Pitchfork pans their second album for no reason!

I wish there was a happy medium between heckling lame stonefaced boring DC gawpers and being one…oh yeah, it’s just rocking out and minding your own business!

January 18, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Cale Says:

Didn’t they pan the first album already?

January 18, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Dominic Says:

Let’s hope they are popular - we wouldn’t want Columbia Records to feel dumb about signing them to a four album deal.

shmeter Says:

I’d have to say that I felt the power of seeing MGMT live versus the sound of their album (the album sounds sorta guitar-less), and I think they’re a hell of a tight band live. Yeasayer’s album (in my humble opinion) is one of the best albums of 2007, if not THE best. Their live show was really really good here, but it’s hard to pull off that sound on that album in a live performance. They did a wonderful job, but I did miss some of the more drone-like percussion and harmonies that populated the album– no doubt they each had their hands full with their instruments and their technological accomplices. I guess I was expecting a Mahavishnu-like orchestra on the backstage! hehe.
YEASAYER ROCKS. MGMT ROCKS. NO DOUBT, INDEED, A BRILLIANT PAIRING! HAVE FUN IN THE DEEP SOUTH! (Baton Rouge).

Johnny Says:

Let me start by saying that the show was a tremendous release. I got majorly hyped up for the show, and shit yeah, both bands exceeded expectations. The thing that severly bothered me was that with so few people were actually able to get tickets, there was still a pocket of assclowns in the front-center of the venue. I mean really, was it somebody’s twenty first birthday (or at least the celebration of somebody’s first fake ID)? How else do you explain being trashed, not facing the band, and pushing those around you in order to dance like it was a fucking Ozomatli concert? It was difficult for me to watch/get stepped on by these fucktards without thinking about how many other MGMT fans were left outside the doors. It was a shame that multiple college sophmores with a quick internet connection and low alcohol tolerance attempted to steal the spotlight from two of the more talented bands to grace DC with their presence.

Stephanie Says:

I am so incredibly bummed out that I missed the bus on getting tickets to this one.

Buuuut, I saw them back in…September? October? Backstage. Monumental in so many ways. I’m glad they are getting the props they so definitely, definitely deserve.
