Okay...so, I’ll admit that I’ve never really been part of the “oh my gosh, I totally LOVE Wilco” club. I mean...I’ve always appreciated Wilco and the fact that they have such a strong bond with their fans...but they were never a band that I’ve ever gone musically gaga over. With that said...I went to their show last night at the 9:30 Club to see what all the hype was about. As I walked into the sold out crowd...the energy and excitement was palpable...and as the music swirled around the club...it was easy to see that Wilco is the real deal. Jeff Tweedy had the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand with his down-to-earth banter...it kind of felt like we were all in his living room and he was hosting a jam session for a few hundred of his closest friends. As for the other musicians he’s assembled to play with him...well, simply put...they were amazing! I was literally mesmerized as I watched them weave in and out of each song. There was an on stage harmony between the musicians that you just don’t see at every show and the vibe of the show was one of comfort...one of community...between the fan and the band...very reminiscent of the sort of vibe that the Grateful Dead created with their fans for over three decades. So there you have it...I guess I can officially say that I’m a Wilco convert. Let’s put it this way...I will gladly let them try and break my heart any day of the week.

Amazing show, this was actually the 8th time I've seen Wilco, and definitely one of the, if not THE, best Wilco show I've ever been to. Everytime I've seen them with this particular lineup, who have been together since 2004, they seem to further gel as a band. This show was spectactular since, coming off their 5-day full catalogue stint in Chicago, every Wilco song imaginable was in play. Jeff Tweedy even said that he went through several old DC setlists to find songs that they hadn't played in the city in years. Several songs I'd never seen played live before, like "Pieholden Suite" (with horns) and "Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)" from Summerteeth absolutely blew me away. And when Nels busted out the double-necked guitar and looked ready to rock, the last song I would've predicted them to play was "Someday Soon" from Being There, but it was incredible nonetheless. They also rocked three songs from their nearly-forgotten debut, A.M., which, while I'm not typically excited about, managed to whip the crowd into a frenzy, especially the John Stirratt-sung, "It's Just That Simple."
The set list looks awesome for both shows. As might be suspected I am thrilled to see so much older material in there now. They had 5 nights in Chicago with basically the same crowd each night so they dusted off a lot of stuff. Other than "Casino Queen" I wouldn't complain - haha. By the way, I hate kharma. Leaving work last night at exactly 7:40 I got in my car and turned on my satellite radio (we have both services which is totally geeky so don't be mad at me Tobi as it wasn't your after school show) and dammit if "Casino Queen" didn't come on. Seriously.
While listening to Wilco band one feels that their music is special. Since its creation in 1994 the band has recreated rock music and added a lot to it. Their style attracts a lot of people, and I’m no exception. Their popularity is fairly noticed in their concerts where it becomes so hard to find a ticket and prices become so high. I come to discover a site where to compare ticket prices for free and it’s really a great idea because this way one could look for the cheapest prices offered.

It’s good to be thrifty but not mean especially when we want to watch such great bands.
