Photos and words by Paul Goodman.
Swedish band The Sounds played the 9:30 Club Monday night and lead Maja Ivarsson was all over the stage in short shorts and her bleach blonde ‘do. The view from the photo pit was compelling but from the first song I couldn’t stop thinking about Emily Haines and Metric. Turns out I’m not alone, as a quick Google search of “Metric and The Sounds” turns up plenty of comparisons in YouTube video comments, Amazon “Also Bought” sections, and so on.
I’m sure that someone (in the comments here?) could expertly draw our attention the bands’ similarities/differences. They use similar ingredients (loud guitars and energetic blondes) to make similarly loud and energetic music. The Swedish version was OK last night, but I didn’t get the sense that Ivarsson’s vocal talents outshine her look.

great photos paul
dude awesome pictures.. i wish i could have been there.
always amazing shows
and they're way better than Metric
better charting singles, high kicks and all around performative energy
I liked Maja Ivarsson better when she was in Cobra Starship.
i love these shots! particularly the one of the long legs in the strappy stilettos.
