Live DC: Chromeo-Oooh-Oh @ 9:30 Club

I wasn’t supposed to review this show.  I paid for my ticket dammit, that means I’m supposed to sit back and relax and not take notes.  But sometimes things don’t go as planned.  So here I am.  With my belly full of free Miller Lite and Dippin Dots. I catch the second half of Treasure Fingers DJ set.  It was technically proficient and a lot of fun.  Lots of yummy electro.  A crowd obvi anxious to hear the headliners was quite receptive to an unknown DJ opener.  He left the stage and the Chromeo-Oooh-Oh chanting began.

um… I LOVE CHROMEO.  With all my body.  Including my pee pee.

I love the fact that they say their name in every song.
I love the fact that they had lady leg synths.
I love the fact that P-Thugg took his shirt off and threw it into the audience only to replace it with the same shirt.
I love the fact that they are humble and cute.
I love the fact that they were honestly taken aback by the tremendous love the DC crowd gave them.
I love the fact that they teased Dire Straits and Journey.
I love how they chucked drum sticks into the audience for no reason.
I love Dave 1’s tight pants.
I love the P-Thugg’s talk box.
I love that they hung out afterwards and chatted with fans.

and I love that they posed in pictures with BYT stickers.

It was their first time in DC and their last show of the tour before heading back to work on new material.  Lots of programmed beats, Dave 1 on guitar and vocals, P-Thugg on multiple synths, talk box, and mini drum kit.  Highlights were Opening Up, Bonafied Lovin’, and Momma’s Boy.  They cranked through the entire Fancy Footwork album + choice cuts from the older material.  Lot’s of audience non-annoying participation, handclapping and chanting.  Chromeo seem ripe for hipster backlash, but their sweetness and authenticity on stage would have won over even the most jaded.

There wasn’t a dull moment all night, and a seemingly short set was beefed up by 3 encores and a confetti explosion

Afterwards Will Eastman and Treasure Fingers rocked the downstairs bar the best they could in the sub optimal conditions for the official after party.  The area is smaller than my freshman dorm room, but with less space, and the club staff didn’t really know how to handle the crowd.  People weren’t allowed to use the upstairs bathroom or exit from the main steps.  The music was great, but it was a claustrophobic nightmare and I had to get out of there.

But no matter, I was still high from the absolutely lovely experience of seeing this hilariously fantastic band put on a ridiculously entertaining show that exceeded my expectations.
I love Chromeo.

Fuck you, guy.

I wish I had seen the whole show, my friend left her god damn phone on the metro so we had to wait around for her to get it. Showed up as they started playing Fancy Footwork. At least they did 3 encores. I just wanted to hear ‘Me and My Man’. God damn it.

yo clown prince - that’s when you leave your jackass friend behind to get her phone back by herself - fuck paying for other people’s mistakes!

Clown Prince Says:

I know, man. I was so fucking pissed off! She gave me attitude all day cuz I didn’t pick her up from the metro and then she fucks up like this and laughs it off. It was whatever, got my shirt, saw some jams, got drunk at dc9 after. It was still a great night. I hope they hit DC after their next album drops.

damn looks really dope!! they are such great live performers, my favorite (saw them in la like a year ago) was mama’s boy, such a crowd pleaser. Treasure fingers is a beast too…the people do look a little young though…

tim Says:

i thought the show was kind of meh, but maybe the crowd just got me in a shitty mood, what with all the really hammered drunk people that keep falling into me. a couple people were too drunk to stand up by the end of the show.

the crowd was definitely young/fratty/narrowly focused on mating; pick your elitist descriptors.

Cale Says:

Tim - I was in the balcony the whole time (where I usually go at sold out shows) and the crowd around me was totally cool. My friend had a similar experience as you though down below.

The 930 club show totally sucked in comparison to their virginfest performance where they also covered journey and The Outfield’s Your Love, which isn’t so awesome hearing for the 2nd time while surrounded by white-capped douchebags, however, you would never know 300 pounds could sound so cute without experiencing p-thuggs talkbox. treasure fingers has djed DC three times in the past 4 months and always delivers even when the party is in a space the size of a subway car, but I wish Dave 1’s lil bro A-Trak was part of the lineup

Clown Prince Says:

The fact that Dave 1 and A-Trak are related always makes me swoon.
