While I was at the Juliette Lewis show at RNR I saw this kid taking meticulous notes during it. I can only assume this was for some write-up purposes but lets just put this out there:
This wasn't the kind of show where you take notes to review it. (I am in general anti-note taking at any show, it takes away from the experience and reviewing a show IS ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE)
Having said that... this was the kind of show where you dance and drink to review it. I mean, there was shirtlessness all around.
And feather headdresses.
And the photos Page and Lexie took are probably more important than anything I'll write so I'll keep it short.
We missed Sufrajett but considering that when I went to tinkle there was a sharpied note of the stall that said "SUFRAJETT ROCKS" so you know what? I'm gonna believe it. You can't wash it away so it better be true.
Then, as the Hotel kept getting more and more packed it was Scissors for Lefty time. I read somewhere they describe themselves as "pillow talk pop" which I think perfectly sets the expectations for some frolicky yet intimate music. I also know that I enjoy listening to "Next to Argyle" while we get ready-and they didn't dissapoint.
It was so catchy that you had no choice but to bounce away with them. And it was just tongue-in-cheek enough that you were ok when they started taking their shirts off.
Which, let it be said, is always welcome by us.
The boys put on a good show, and if you haven't seen them before-see them next time. We will.
And now for the main act: Somewhere in the middle of the set I sent this message to Morgan who was unable to make it:
"She is amazing. And her band is totally the kind of people you'd want to have an orgy with. If we were the kind of people that had orgies"
Which basically sums up the Juliette and The Licks concert experience.
Here are some points, just to nail the idea in:
-Juliette Lewis is a star. And for a reason. I mean, she yells, she snarls, she jumps into the audience and has the kind of broken-in voice that makes you want to become a smoker. Even though you may die of it.
-While this band is nothing new and ground breaking musically, it certainly is PRETTY GROUND BREAKINGLY ENTERTAINING. In a "back to basics" kinda way. There is a sense of humor and fuck-offness about them that makes you feel like really, you ARE at a rock show.
-She stage-dived. Sorta I mean, she jumped into the audience. Not very many people jump into the audience these days. And really, I feel like they should.
-The band took their shirts off. Now, give me a night with two shirtless bands and I am sold. We all need more shirtless bands in our lives. The best part about the shirtlessness of The Licks is that is just spit in the face of the fact that most people were there because Juliette is a sex symbol and they all have wet dreams of her licking Robert De Niro's fingers in "Cape Fear" and then...she turns it around, and slaps some topless males in your face. Amen to you Juliette.
- The room stank. Of sweat. And if you think about it...not very many rooms stink of sweat during shows these days, and no matter how gross of a concept that is, I feel like they should.

That last photo is amazing
Too bad you missed Suffrajett! I wanted a review of them, too. I saw them at SXSW and they rocked.
Orgies are fun.
JL still sucks.
JL kind of rules. i mean let's get real - bodysuits and headdresses?!?!?!?! i'm so in love with that.
That girl with the nose ring and her friend kind of rule.
JL still sucks.
The show kicked ass. I'm kind of in love with Juliette. And Simi from Sufrajett for that matter. Still having issues with Lexie's site tho-- does it only show the slide show on the splash page or can you go deeper into the site and see more from her portfolio?
yeah, slideshow only right now.
it's a current work in progress.
more facets coming soon.
