Iron and Wine played a sold out show at 930 this Saturday. We had Becca write this review. And we think she did a bang up job
First of all, Iron and Wine is one of my favorite bands, and they make me think about
a. all of my bearded-(and not so bearded)-friend-boys from college, and
b. making out.
So for me to have not enjoyed the show, Sam Beam would have had to be a raging asshole, which he absolutely wasn’t. He was wonderful. His voice was amazing. The show was magical. He played lots of the songs from his new record, but threw in pretty much all of the songs that people are obsessed with from previous records (except for “Sixteen, Maybe Less”, ahem), and the crowd adored him. AND for his encore he only played one song, and there is no easier way to win/cement my love than that.
Of course, one might say that a sold-out 9:30 Club show is not the ideal place to see Iron and Wine, and that is absolutely true.
Who knew there were so very many very tall men in DC?
Or just how many of them could cram into that space?

God loves a cheerful giver.

it was a great show. i would have liked more of just Mr. Beam and his guitar, but they played upwards over the mountain, which sealed the deal for me.
sam as an asshole, i can't even imagine that.
The only song I know they did was the cover to that Postal Service song.
They have almost as many people in their band as Belle and Sebastian.
Not that this has much to do with the I & W show itself but:
I'm about 6 ft/5-11 and the tall dudes at shows thing annoys me too. Maybe it's me but it seems to be a recent phenomenon.
Just this past weekend I was at Galaxy Hut (2C Death by Sexy) and right in the middle of the set this huge mountain of a man walked up and stood DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME! My friend (who's only 5-2 herself) moved over and so I could see again but I did let Gigantor know he was kinda in the way.
Another story: earlier this year at a show at the Black Cat these two beanstalks were standing side by side and a shorter young lady very politely asked if they could move just a little bit so she could see. Their response was something like, "I'm sorry, we're tall and we like indie rock" and they didn't budge. I mean really!
