Now for the words+photos combo:
I saw Oxford Collapse for the first time two years ago when they opened for We Are Scientists (with whom they will be playing with again August 2nd, buy your tickets now!) They were wonderful then, and they are wonderful now, if not more refined. Their raw, yet polished garage band sound should be heard everywhere.
They opened with immense energy, and while unfortunately the crowd wasn’t as energetic – Oxford Collapse didn’t seem to notice. On tracks like Lady Lawyers, their harmonies, while still retaining that previously mentioned raw sound, have improved since the album, especially at the end of the song. On others their long drawls and yelps just brought the audience closer.
Mixed among oldies were new songs from BITS! BITZ! which is to be released in August. The Birthday Wars was one song that exemplified their ability to create an up-tempo beat while maintaining their slow melodies. They were really on their way during Molasses, a song that asks a supposed lover “Why can’t I pick the scabs off your legs?” which sure, is gross, but this is one of my favorites, since somehow the most unappealing things at first become endearing as we learn to love.
At a slow point between songs Mike mentioned Ben’s Chili Bowl, and well, we all know how awesome that place is. Now they do, too. They also now know that it’s not the best thing to eat before a show.
After another new song (I’m really excited for this new album, by the way, if you didn’t notice. I’m also upset that I couldn’t decipher all the names of the new songs from the set list) they gave Harry and the Potters a nod upstairs, “…no, no, they’re cool…” and strolled into Please Visit Your National Parks, a yelp-heavy ditty that wishes for a certain someone to be “standing right next to me.”
As they swooped to-and-fro on stage Mike managed to hold onto a classic rock sound on the guitar while Adam picked up a more experimental line on bass. After playing an explosive Volcano which they dedicated to all the “assholes and the pricks…(and) the virgins and the whores” (cheesy pun, completely intended) they decided to “get mature for a second” and fell into a dreamy, passionate Forgot to Write.
They closed with another new song and left the stage as each instrument’s sound died out leaving only Dan on the drums.
Somehow these boys from Brooklyn don’t have a bigger following. I hope that playing a sold-out show to an audience who came because Sunday Source told them to go see Frightened Rabbit will give them more exposure that they haven’t had, and maybe much deserved recognition. These guys play one hell of a show that exudes power, passion and complete and utter loss in the music they’re creating. Bands this real are few and far between. If you missed them last night, be sure to catch them in August or September (or preferably both).
I didn’t realize I was seeing Frightened Rabbit until I e-mailed Svetlana about the list and she said I would be on their’s. Then I saw them in the “Can’t Miss” section of the Source and braced myself for the unknown. Until last night I had never heard them.
They have a similar sound to Oxford Collapse’s, though slower, more articulate, and nervous. At the end of their first song Scott said, ”If it looks like we’re shitting ourselves, it’s because we probably are, we’ve never played to this many people.” I found this a bit hard to believe. I mean they’re from Scotland doing an American tour. His rambling about shit, and writing your name on the brick in his pants was not-so-quickly cut off by the guitarist leading into the next song.
Scott’s voice is strained and as such… it is also perfect. It’s accusations and stories flow and sweep and fill the room with a certain sense of contentment. Each song had a beginning, middle, and end. It would build, and climax, and end before you realized it was over.
As the set progressed they grew more comfortable on stage, even during the awkward silences. Scott would make friendly conversation with the audience and at one point Adam (of Oxford Collapse) muttered something that Scott caught – “If you’ve got something to say, share it with the whole class,” in an accent I’m sure most would have been fine listening to if there had been no music. Adam volunteered to sit in the corner.
When one person shouted “I love you!” during one of the aforementioned silences Scott shrugged, made a quizzical face and said, “I love you?” back.
Frightened Rabbit’s harmonies, especially those offered by drummer Grant (apparently it runs in the family) were sleepy and melodic; they play the type of music you can close your eyes to.
Do it.
Put on one of their songs (start with a slower one), stand up, and close your eyes.
Their music will grab you and take you to a not-so-unfamiliar place, but one you wouldn’t mind visiting again.
This was one kick-ass show. I’d been waiting to see Oxford Collapse for some time now, and they DID NOT disappoint. Freightened Rabbit were new to me, but I walked away very interested in what they had to offer. Count me a fan of both now.
July 2, 2008 at 2:03 pmPainfully wonderfully shots by Lexie!!! How were Takka Takka Lex? Two major disappointments in that our interview with the Rabbits didn’t come through (maybe it still will…) and I missed this show. It was offset by my little girl turning 7 on Monday (Cale yawns) but I wish I could have been at both.
July 2, 2008 at 2:47 pmthanks fits!
thanks john!
as for takka takka’s performance…they had a likable sound that i immediately took akin to, and i honestly enjoyed their very real set over the two acts that proceeded it. plus, im a sucker for clever lyrics and black frames.
July 2, 2008 at 3:41 pmis lexie that really short brunettel? christ shes cute.
Oxford Collapse reminded me alotalotalot of early Rainer Maria shows.
takka takka’s drum/bass was really awesome.. but having 3 guitarists and none of them bothering to try to do rhythm/chords kinda made me want to fall asleep and i think the lead singer is that dude from SNL.
i left my body during a couple of the FR songs.
July 2, 2008 at 7:37 pmOxford Collapse were indeed excellent, charming and incredibly passionate about every single note they played. The drummer was lost in music, the bassist was a whirlwind of energy and excitement, and the lead singer was a slightly nebbish but very happy man.
Frightened Rabbit were enormously disappointing - especially considering I’d never heard them or or about them. I couldn’t help feeling I’d heard it all before, done better, many, many times. The lead singer was very charming, funny, self-deprecating, and in spite of the relentlessly banal music, I found myself willing them to be good. The crowd were in raptures. I just didn’t get it. They were better, as Amanda said, with my eyes closed (I nearly fell asleep from boredom standing up - I think I dreamed they had a hook or a memorable line while I was under). I walked out, completely befuddled and slightly disgusted. Maybe in six months, maybe a year, they’ll be something special. For now, if you see them, keep your expectations low.
July 2, 2008 at 11:21 pmyou must be on some heavy medication or were at the wrong show. FR are an amazing live band and have recorded the best album of 08 so far. watch this space. they are going to be huge !
July 3, 2008 at 10:16 ami wouldn’t say it’s the best album this year, but it is pretty good. and i agree they’re going to be pretty big, hopefully it won’t go to their heads.i think oxford collapse was more fun to watch though.
and in william’s defense, he hasn’t been getting much sleep had jet lag, etc.

July 3, 2008 at 11:42 ami think 2nd quarter needs to include wolf parade’s new album. i can’t remember what it’s called right now, but it’s amazing.
July 3, 2008 at 12:35 pmGood chance I write 2nd qtr in a week or two - hmmm. I am really surprised at the split reaction on the show. Not just on byt but all over the blogosphere. More than anything I think the Collapse and the Rabbit are a bad pairing. Seems like the earlier shows with FR and French Kicks might have been slightly better.
By the way, droves of people were leaving after FR on that tour and the early shows with Oxford as well so the OC boys asked to switch places to share in the buzz. I think FR were embarrassed, but the bands are friendly and they just did whatever OC wanted which is how the bill changed order a few weeks ago.
July 3, 2008 at 2:54 pmthat makes sense. when i asked dan and adam about the change they were really modest and said that it was FR’s tour more than theirs because FR has a new album and theirs doesn’t come out for a bit.
July 3, 2008 at 3:00 pmI am so glad to hear how well FR’s US tour has been going down. I think they are bigger over there than they are here just now but I know it’s only a matter of time before people start catching on. I, myself, have got my friends hooked after just a few songs and everyday someone else will tell me how amazed they are by the sound of these guys. I cannot wait to see them live again because live FR is the best. Also the guys are some of the nicest people you could ever meet.
I’ve really gotten into Oxford Collapse since they supported We Are Scientists on the UK tour and I am eager for them to come back to our shores. I wasn’t paying enough attention during their support slot and only got into the music after when I got hold of some songs. And I remember them having such a good time on stage as well so I’d love to see them again to take proper notice and enjoy it to the full. If they toured with WAS again on these shores or teamed up with FR it’d be amazing.
July 7, 2008 at 11:49 pmSusie: Did you not read anything I wrote? Oxford Collapse Will be touring with WAS again, very soon in fact.
July 8, 2008 at 9:50 amI’m in the UK, Scotland specifically. That’s what I meant by FR being bigger over there than here right now. They are getting some more attention now though and I’ve got all my friends listening, I don’t think I’ve shut up about FR since they passed through Stirling on the UK Midnight Organ Fight tour.
And I would love OC to come back here and tour with FR or WAS or just headline themselves. I’d just like to see them again really.
