Come EARLY FOR:

In which, we remind you that when you shell out those 20 dollars at 930 club, 10 bucks at the Cat or 12 at the Hotel, you’re not JUST paying to see the headliner, oh no, you’re there to see a few other, often above and beyond worthy bands.
In this edition, a little British, a little West Coast, a touch of Brooklyn and DC’s biggest 2007 suprise:

Pop Levi

“Blue Honey” (off of the “Black Majick Party”, listen to it here: 01.Blue Honey-Pop Levi.mp3) is seriously a perfect piece of retro-london-throwback-dirty-yet-insanely-glamorous music. Pop (who used to play with Ladytron) describes his music as “Bad Music for Bad People” and if this is bad, we really don’t want to be good.
Wear some skinny jeans, and make sure your asymetrical haircut is just a tad more symmetrical for this.

Moonrats

Nathan Thelen started “Moonrats” after leaving Pretty Girls Make Graves (for whom they are now opening on their farewell tour). They play bassless (only guitar, drums, and keyboard), vaguely Blonde Redhead (Japanese front woman to boot) inspired LA based punk pop. The songwriting has minor fake-grandeur tendencies, all of which is recorded in 2 song spurts, mini EP style, but you know what…we like it. So there.

Joan as Police Woman

Joan Wasser has worked (mostly violin playing related) with everyone from Anthony and the Johnsons to the Scissor Sisters to Rufus Winwright and has finally released her solo album “Ride”, under, in our opinion, absolutely amazing “Joan as Police Woman” moniker. Not a camp act (as name and previous collaborations may suggest) it is filled with strong yet dreamy vocals and has the ability to draw you into a separate universe where you float around on clouds above Brooklyn while drinking stiff drinks AND… feeling slow but certain tingles down you spine. The Andrew Bird show is sold out (shocking! we know, since EVERYTHING is sold out at the 930 club these days), but we hope she comes back at a more intimate venue for a solo show (Iota, are you listening?)

Le Loup

The DC suprise revelation of 2007, Le Loup has thus far played a total of 3 local shows (and we know this as they kindly let us know about them all). 1 at Iota, 1 at DC9 and 1 at The Cat. And guess what? Someone from SupPop showed up at one of these 3 shows, and loved the 7 member, banjo-guitar-etc band so much…they’re already signed, barely months into their existence and with Pitchfork being all over them, mentions of “new arcade fireness” being thrown around and you get to see them this Tuesday before they (probably) ridiculously blow up. Take note.
