Brightest Young Things

Legends, icons, idols, Beastie Boys. Ahhh, yes, bringing me back to seventh grade every time I hear anything off of Ill Communication. Admit it, whenever you see someone dressed up as a cop from the Sabotage video for Halloween, you are filled with warm fuzzy feelings. They STILL rule a special little place in your heart.

The Beastie Boys played the 930 Club on Monday night alongside Justin Jones, Citizen Cope and Sheryl Crow. It was an all-star lineup for sure, but also a really weird one. So, as an editorial decision we decided only to shoot the Beastie Boys, because let's be honest, they deserve a post all to themselves. Beasties, at the 930 Club, whuuuut (you say)!?!? Exactly, and Sheryl Crow (barf, we know)?

The Beasties came out Monday night to much fanfare and put on a no frills show. Minimal lighting, zero wardrobe, no props, but a packed house. Despite the fact that they look like they're fifty-years old, they sounded great and delivered just what you would expect, a frantic flurry of rhymes and high-pitched energy from a trio that has come to define hip hop all the while seemingly being anything but.

Here's the set list, Sure Shot (number 3) just about brought the house down.

Okay, and I had to include this one last. Look closely at what MCA (Adam Yauch) is sipping on... there appears to be a tea tag hanging from his cup! Unless that's a hot toddy, old man Yauch (that silver fox) is sippin on some Earl Grey! Long gone are the days of drinking forty bottles I'm guessing, these dudes are sticking to caffeine these days to get them amped for a show. These guys gotta fight for their right to a spot in line at Starbucks these days apparently. Awesome.

No matter how embarassingly old or preachy the Beasties get, no matter how many shitty later years records they end up putting out, nothing can ever bring them down. Geniuses for LIFE.

To the 5 Boroughs & The Mix-Up = "shitty later years records?" That's a deafening False.

No, I didn't mean it to read that way. I said "they *end up* putting out" as in, I'm assuming it's gonna go down hill any second now.

It was indeed crowded. A super-packed house of the Beasties' fanbase (i.e. 30-something former suburban kids) And I was damn psyched to be a part of it.

I'll come out and say that to the 5 boroughs was complete crap.

You know when you get a puppy and you wish it would stay that way forever. That's how I feel about the beastie boys. I don't want them to get old. I just want them to stay 22-year old silly rappers who fill their rhymes with inside jokes that nobody gets but them.

Great pictures, heard it was a great show, seems like a scaled down version of the '04 show at 9:30, although I would have hoped for some tracks from The Mix-Up (or maybe some new tracks)

Cruel and unusual punishment to have Beasties, De La/Santogold and Jay-Z playing at the same time around the city (Although I don't regret picking the Jay-Z show/extravaganza)

Oh Word?

C'mon Jeff, there were some sweet moments on that record.

Dakota, it might have been nice to mention that the show was a fundraiser for Rock the Vote - of which both Sheryl Crow and the Beastie Boys are big supporters. And also that it was completely sold out. As was RTV's Tuesday night show at the 930 Club with Dresden Dolls, Talib Kweli, the Honey Brothers, Grace Potter, etc.

this show was sold out capacity....but seriously, i went to both nights, and you guys should have gone done the second night. Talib Kwali and the dresdon dolls...that show was dope.
