Hailing from Youngstown, Ohio, brothers Gil Mantera and Ultimate Donny play synth pop/rock/new wave/prog music mixed with performance art/striptease. And they use a lot of vocoder. They’ll be at The Red and The Black tonight with Kodiak and Puddin Tang. Doors 9pm, show 9:30pm, $10.
We got the skinny from Gil over email via a road side coffee shop on their way to DC:
Brightest Young Thigns: I have had a number of people independently approach me in the last couple weeks with a “I think you’d be all about this band” comment. What does this say about my friends’ opinion of me?
Gil Mantera: It says that you like to screw around a lot and that you’re probably a total flake and can’t maintain a decent relationship for too long. Your friends are assholes.
BYT: Can you give a brief history of the band – embellishment/lying is encouraged.
GM: It’s not too interesting really. We are brothers and we’ve been pretty cool for a long time, so we just naturally got things going.

BYT: What would be Gil Mantera’s party nightmare?
GM: A show with all dudes who are latent homosexuals, but compensate for that with aggressive lunk-head behavior.
BYT: Gil Mantera’s wet dream?
GM: A show in a graveyard with only hot broads and dogs wearing sunglasses in the audience.
BYT: After playing with The Rapture how did it feel to be 2 degrees separated from Daft Punk?
GM: I’m too into myself to give too much of a shit about that.
BYT: There seems to be a reoccurring theme of nudity at your live shows – has this ever resulted in harsh words between you and the club management and/or Johnny law?
GM: Not really. We do it in a tasteful way.
BYT: Best party album of all time?
GM: No. 1 in Heaven by Sparks
BYT: Best party game of all time? (ie Scattergories)
GM: Super Bomb Man.
