Brightest Young Things

We first saw Raleigh's The Rosebuds when Will Eastman brought them to Bliss a year or so a go, and they kept us dancing all night, so naturally, we are most excited that they are back in town. Fresh off the well received "Night of The Furies" release (which sports a slightly darker, more epic pop sound than their previous two releases), Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp (who not only make beautiful music together but ARE together, much in the vein of SUbmarines and Mates of State, neither of which they should be confused for, as their sound is becoming less and less twee by the second) arrive at the Rock'N'Roll hotel this Tuesday. We caught up with Ivan en route to here to ask a few questions, about the new record, love and music and some recommendations along the way.

BYT: First of all, tell us about how The Rosebuds met and started making out?
Rosebuds:We met at a party. Making out... I'm not telling you that.

BYT:When one hears the name, I feel people expect to hear things in the "Camera Obscura", more twee vein, as opposed to the more energetic, almost punky pop youguys play...How did you pick the name?
Rosebuds:I played an open mike in disguise as a character called "Kip Rosebud and the Show"." It evolved from there. Not from Orson Welles. We never thought about the name informing the sound because we had no idea of what we would sound like in the future. Still don't.

BYT: The Night of the Furies" has been out for about amonth now, what is your favorite review of it? (so we don't have to write one-jk)
Rosebuds:Here is one I found that makes sense...click here

BYT:This record definetly did bring a change in the sound, what happenned? Did your tastes change? Were you simply just ready for something different?
Rosebuds:Yeah, we are always ready for something different. I think touring in a van may have influenced us. It's not regular life, you know? It's not what people do. It's mechanical. But really I think we finally put ourselves totally in charge and got to the point where
we are good enough musicians to make the kind of record we have always wanted to hear. Nobody is going to release the perfect record for us to listen to in the van, so we did it.

BYT: How did the "fury" inspiration came about?
Rosebuds:Kelly is basically a Genius.

BYT:What kind of stuff are you listening to nowdays?
Rosebuds:We like the new Ponys record "Turn out the Lights", Ian Brown's "The Greatest," a new band called "Bon Iver," Land of Talk's new e.p., The Morning Benders.... the list goes on and on....

BYT: Best band we've never heard of?
Rosebuds:The Loners ( www.myspace.com/thelonersnc )

BYT: Perfect song?
Rosebuds:"I wanna be adored" by the Stone Roses.

BYT: Perfect music couple? In history.
Rosebuds:Kim Gordon / Thurston Moore

BYT:What are the pros and cons of being a couple IN a band together?
Rosebuds:We have the chance to spend all of our time together.
We have the chance to spend all of our time together.

BYT: Tell us about Raleigh? What landed you there and is keeping you there...? If we were to come and visit, what would you say was unmissable in it?

Rosebuds:All those answers are music. The music here was fucking great. We thought it was a perfect secret
music town and we wanted to move here. Then we stayed because our friends are here and it's still a secret town and we can come home and be invisible. Or, sort of normal.

BYT: You played in DC a year or so a go, at Bliss, at Black cat. (we were there, and it was great). What do you remember most about our nation's capital?
Rosebuds:It is hard to navigate is the thing I remember the most. When we go to DC we really don't sight-see
much, just hang out with our friend who lives just outside the city.

BYT:Do you have any special plans, show aside, for when you are here in a few weeks? Something you always wanted to see?
Rosebuds:We want to see our friend's new baby boy.

BYT: What is the favorite place you played and why?
Rosebuds:Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. It is just so gorgeous and palace like

BYT: Least Favorite and why?
Rosebuds:Sin-e in NYC. Nothing good about it at all.

BYT: Is being a Rosebud everything you hoped it would be?
Rosebuds:Yes. But never really had any thoughts past the first show so the whole thing is fine with me. I liked surveying land, but this is better.

BYT: What is next for the Rosebuds?
Rosebuds:The big US TOUR, then on to more recording projects. I think Kelly and I both are going to record our own records this summer and work on other art projects.

God loves a cheerful giver.
