Woolly Mammoth’s Mad Hatter Benefit Bash at The Fairmont Hotel

I can think of a couple of things harder than raising money. No I can’t. Funding a theater company with an annual operating budget of $3 million in the era of Dubya/Cheney is a task firmly out of bake-sale territory. Fuck the cupcakes; The Woolly Mammoth Theater Company hosted an Alice In Wonderland-themed benefit party at the Fairmont Hotel last saturday. The staff and volunteers(pic) of “Washington’s most daring theater company” (according to the New York Times) pulled off an exceptionally fun and unfuddy-duddy night.
The party kicked off at 6 PM with cocktails and a silent auction. Drink some, spend some. Attendees — most of whom were fully committed to at least the hat part of theme — enthusiastically bid on everything from signed books and (you don’t say) theater tickets, to items from the set of Ab Fab(pic), with plenty of hobknobbing in between.











At 8, the bidding closed, trumpets sounded and, of course, the White Rabbit come out, danced through the auction space and led everyone with their funny colored drinks to the dining hall. Guests were treated to first course plates of tiny burgers — “So, are these sliders?” — and a video presentation on Woolly Mammoth’s history. Trying to photograph (the projected image of) the Cheshire Cat proved to be futile, since after all …
