The Week in Gunz

The Week in Gunz

July 1, 2008 by Svetlana Send to a Friend Send to a Friend

As you probably recall, last week SCOTUS voted against the DC Ban on Guns. Michael reported and MSPainted about it and a lot of you commented. If Charleton Heston was still around, he’d be proud.

And with that began what will be known as the “3-ring-circus of guns-in-DC news” so, as always we are jumping in, with a series of handy links and clips:

    • I sent these links to Michael, aiming to bait him into writing this post instead of me and all he did was say “I already bought 37 of them” and then he sent me this clip:
    • Which has nothing to do with guns but is one of my favorite songs of all time so I am running it.
It also reminded me that in March when the gun ban started, we ran this classy gun-ban playlist so I am going to rerun it now, because it was really good, and you need some music today while you’re out gun shopping:

    guns-arms.jpg

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - Nancy Sinatra
    HOT.

Gun Street Girl - Tom Waits
One of my all time favorite Tom Waits tracks. Brilliant. If you don’t own Rain Dogs, stop what you’re doing right now and go buy it, listen to it on repeat every day for a week. Possibly in the top 10 greatest albums of all time.

    Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix
Check out the ridiculously detailed wikipedia article on this song: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hey_Joe

Big Man With A Gun - Nine Inch Nails
Back in high school I did some sort of report on this album, I don’t really remember what it was about, but I do remember part of it involved me playing March Of The Pigs on a stereo for the class. Also I used to crank this song up as the background music while I played Quake. I was a loser. But this album is not. At all.

With A Gun - Steely Dan
Check out my Steely Dan love here:
    http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/music/i-love-steely-dan

Guns of Brixton - Nouvelle Vague
One of the few Nouvelle Vague covers I really like.

Get Your Guns - Nine Black Alps
These guys are awesome, this is from the album Everything Is. Thanx Grace!

Gunpowder & Lead - Miranda Lambert
I had this left over from the domestic violence playlist: My indie cred doesn’t quite allow me to enjoy this tune, but if you’re only going to listen to one top 40 country track this year, this should probably be it.

Don’t Take Your Guns To Town - Johnny Cash
Folsom Prison Blues was too easy

Babies With Guns - Aesop Rock
Although this song is not the best Aesop has to offer, the Bazooka Tooth album as a whole is pretty fantastic.

    Kids With Guns - Gorillaz
I bet you haven’t listened to this album in a while, whip it out again, it’s so god damn good.

Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Beatles
Sometime I have to stop listening to the Beatles for a while cause it makes everything else seem so weak.

Son Of A Gun - Vaselines
One of the handful of Vaselines songs that Nirvana covered. If you don’t already have it, go over to Amazon and pick up the DRM-free mp3 album “The Way Of The Vaselines: A Complete History” for $8.99.

Barrel Of A Gun - Depeche Mode
Honestly, I don’t even like Depeche Mode that much. I mean, have you actually stopped and listened to their lyrics? It is embarrassing. “Just like a rainbow you know you set me free” Good lord!
But yeah, I still like a handful of songs and own like 20 DM albums.

As always, add your suggestion below, or weigh in on the current event spectacular!

    Godspeed.

I’d like to add BWJs - “Don’t Bring a Knife to a Gun Fight”.

Btw, I’ve had “Happiness Is A Warm Gun” stuck in my head ever since the 7th grade.

Anyone who believes that bans work need only to run the gauntlet of Georgia Avenue from Howard U up to about Taylor St. NW on the 4th of July. It’s kind of like a war zone. Helps if you are in a car or a really fast motorcycle. If you’re on a bicycle I feel for you.

I’ll be in Philly all weekend, but someone should go and take pictures.

Oh, and in light of Mission of Burma playing this past weekend, “That’s When I Reach for My Revolver” except the Moby version, because he fucking owned it.

Looks like I need to sign in again.

fenty was at my doorstep early of last year, greetings folks, not a joke. i asked him what his plan of action was re: guns and fireworks. he has yet to address it. let it slide then seeing how charming he appeared at first glance.

sorta irrelevant, but sunny curtis and the crickets’ “i fought the law” is my all time fav shoot’em up song: i’ve jammed, playing this song a few times cracking my snare like gunshot sounds at the lyrics of “robbing ppl w/ six guns…”. i have a smidge of hillbilly in me. pop’s was a peanut farmer.

    that is all.

So, small fireworks are okay, but if I can’t have my artillery shell, what’s the point?
