The DC Deep House Experiment @ That Warehouse in Northeast

The DC Deep House Experiment @ That Warehouse in Northeast

You know the one:
at 4th and New York Avenue N.E., with the hooker motel around back (kidding. maybe). If you spent significant chunks of your life at places like Red, House of Secrets and (the old) State of The Union, then you probably know. If you don’t, believe; you’re missing out on church. It’s the District’s newest, nicest, best-organized (and onliest) underground dj-venue.

The inaugural party was HUGE. The second party (that I went to) banged equally well. Last saturday’s, my third, was put together by DJ Double 07, who along with Ray Kang hosted Knee Deep at the Blue Room (now Bourbon), a deep house party that just a few of years ago owned thursday nights for over two years. Ask anyone. As for this party, “diversity” sort of understates the breadth of flavors on the roster, the way “controversy” falls short of describing the mild drama on the District Soul BBS caused by the party’s announcement thread. DJ scattegories aside, the quality of the party and the communal fever that was felt — especially during Stacy Kidd’s set– goes a long way towards building the legend that this space will become. It will be a good summer.

The complete photoset is here.

great, i already have a hard enough time finding places with actual bands playing on the weekends, now there are underground dj clubs. i understand people love dj’s but seriously, half the the city isnt enough dance nights for people to choose from.

@Matt:
on most weekends there are live bands at The Black Cat, DC9, The Red and The Black, Velvet Lounge, 930 Club, and Rock and Roll Hotel. Between BYT and the City Paper there’s no excuse for not knowing the time.
Not a clue what you mean by “half the city … choose from” except maybe that you need an english grammar tutor in a fuckin hurry.

@Matt, most lounges and clubs are not playing good dance music. That’s why a place like this steps in. Not only do you get great dance music, but you lose the BS attitudes that always gravitate to regular lounges and clubs.

Also, the party is going great without you, so no need to worry.

Does anyone have the set list? I want to know what you people consider “good dance music.”

May 20, 2008 at 10:55 am
Sexy Fitsum Says:

Forget the specifics: it’s nothing you’d recognize. in general, funky music of all varieties - house, breakbeats … that sort of thing. nothing that you’ll dance to and I can say this bc I’ve seen you dance.

Michael Says:

Sexy - thanks. You’re right. I don’t like house, breakbeats, etc. I do like funky music though, if you’re talking 60’s funk. I just like songs with words, actual lyrics, you know?

Everyone’s seen me dance. I take a drink and can’t help it. I’m like Denman, except with the drink.

i haven’t seen michael dance, but now i want to.

Sexy Fitsum Says:

was just qualifying why I thought you wouldn’t dance it bc I’ve seen what you dance to. lots of house tracks contain meaningful lyrics and vocalizing. new love, love lost, personal affirmation, etc just like soul music in general.

Hawtness, whew I felt like I stepped into some strange time-machine that brought me back to the day’s of old. Black, white, gay, straight, etc, the crowd was filled with people who just wanted to get down and skip all the b.s., hard-shoes and striped shirt rules. Man this is what dance music is about. Set list, shmet list. We played a ton of ish that won’t be out for a long time…

the next one I know of is on June 14th but I think it’ll be more electro-y than house. check this site; it’s bound to be in the calendar on the right side of the homepage.

Yes, Stacy needs to be RESIDENT DJ… (hint hint promoters)

I will bring cheesecake for Stacy. He must return!!! DC needs him again.

Yes, DC Family is in the house. If you don’t know — now you know. I saw John Johnson and Dan Soda earlier that evening at the DJ Hut. I knew my night would be all good. (plus funk alliance)

The truth of the matter is…There’s no place like DC!

We dance and keep it going right. There were several times in the night where Stacy kicked it sooooo hard.

I was dancing with Keenan, Claire, Marc, Nia, Sparky, Aaron… it was a good ________ (fill in the old school weekly here) flashback.

Yes, I’m looking forward to the summer gatherings! You can hug me and check my birthday wish list. I celebrate all month long.

See ya on the dance floors. You have been PLUReviewed. ###
